23 years after her death, Princess Diana’s most iconic looks are still relevant

No matter how many years go by, the legacy of the late Princess Diana lives on. And we don’t just mean her fashion legacy. She came to be known as the people’s princess and for all the right reasons. While members of the royal family remained on their balconies and waved on at the crowds, Princess Diana made it a point to make her way through the crowds to meet the people and listened to their problems.

She didn’t comply with the rules of the royal family and similarly, her fashion choices too did not comply with their standards. Many of her outfits were considered outrageous and daring by the royal family, but little did she care. She became, undoubtedly, the greatest fashion icon of the 20th Century and her sense of style is celebrated till this day. And as we mark 23 years since her death, we look back at some of her most iconic looks that are still relevant today.

  1. The monochrome striped suit

Princess Diana’s striped suit by Roland Klein is a classic piece that can still be donned today. Worn by the princess of Wales at the 1987 Royal Ascot, Diana sure turned heads in this little number. The ensemble featured a flowy skirt which was adorned with horizontal stripes. It was teamed with a matching blazer in vertical stripes creating a head turning look. The suit was teamed with a pair of black gloves, a pretty pearl choker and of course, Royal Ascot’s most coveted accessory, the hat!

  1. Pretty polka dots

This is another Royal Ascot look that we simply adore. The look featured the classic polka dot print together with a statement sleeve which we have seen trending in the times of today. The outfit; which was worn for the 1988 Royal Ascot was ruched at the waist and coupled with matching headgear; a must for all Royal Ascot attendees. The look is complete with a monochrome clutch and pearl jewellery and is oh so timeless, just like most of her looks. We wouldn’t mind seeing Kate Middleton in a similar look.

  1. The white power suit

Power suits were having a moment, even back then. Till this day they are a versatile piece which every girl needs in her wardrobe. During an official visit to France with Prince Charles, Princess Diana donned a sophisticated white power suit by Catherine Walker; a designer that Kate Middleton often opts for today. She wore the suit to attend an official dinner at Chateu de Chambord and left heads turning. The suit was teamed with a white clutch and silver shoes and the suit did all the talking!

  1. A gown in all its glory

Once again donning Catherine Walker, Princess Diana stunned in an icy blue chiffon gown to attend the musical Miss Saigon. The stunning strapless dress trailed along the bottom and was ruched at the waist and bust. The gown also featured fabric which was gracefully tied and draped around her neck. The gown was coupled with sparkly silver jewels and a silver clutch and of course her pretty sapphire ring which has now been given to the Duchess of Cambridge.

  1. The revenge dress

And we saved the iconic dress for last! The iconic black dress donned by Princess Diana in 1994 famously came to be known as the “revenge dress” because she wore it the same night Prince Charles committed to adultery with Camilla. The dress had actually been made for Diana three years prior to her wearing it, but she had saved the dress deep down in her closet as she deemed it ‘too daring’ for a princess. But that night, she stepped out in the stunning dress and jaws were left dropping. She made quite the statement in the off-shoulder dress which she teamed with a pearl choker and black heels. Rounding off the look with a pair of black heels and clutch, this iconic dress is talked about till this day.
