After shooting to fame, Nimra Ali faces backlash for insensitive dialogue

Every few weeks, social media sees the rise of a movement, a sensation or a personality. Pakistan’s latest social media sensation is none other than Nimra Ali who has managed to touch the hearts of every Pakistani and her positive energy has been spreading virtually across the country and across social media. The social media sensation recently made headlines when she posted a video in which she expressed her excitement over being featured on television.

 

However, truth be told, the same way in which you can attain fame on social media, you can very quickly be trolled, bashed and be brought down. And it appears this is what recently happened with Nimra Ali. She recently appeared on a morning show where she was asked to reenact a scene from popular TV serial Aangan, starring Sajal Aly.

 

“Gandhi, Nehru, Matam Manao, Hindu ki maiya mar gayi,” was the line Nimra Ali was heard reciting and unfortunately for her Twitter has been enraged by her words. Human Rights Activist, Kapil Dev took to Twitter to share a few words on the snippet which has been circulating on social media since. “It was fun watching Nimra, but she, like many other ignorants, does know that 5 million #Hindus live in #Pakistan. She is a kid, but not the anchors.They should’ve corrected her when she said “Hindu ki Maiya Mar Gayi” rather than clapping on her jingoistic remark. #PakistanForAll,” he penned in his tweet.

 

 

Following his tweet, a number of netizens followed suit and shared his sentiments, saying that she should not have said those words and that the anchors of the show should have intervened to stop her. “Agreed — the anchors should have intervened and told her that Hindu citizens of Pakistan are not lesser Pakistanis. PEMRA must take notice and stop casual bigotry on TV,” another Twitter user wrote.

 

 

Another user took to the microblogging site and wrote, “This ignorance is the result of an ongoing ignorance on part of central state and governments that fail to acknowledge presence of minorities in the country. So very sorry.”

There are some however, who came to her defence, saying that she was only reciting a dialogue from the drama serial. “sir with due respect she was just copying a character from drama,” wrote one user.

 

 

 

 

As the issue flared up and the controversy spread like wildfire on social media, Nimra Ali came to the realisation that the words she used on television were offensive and she immediately apologised. In response to Kapil Dev’s tweet she penned her apology, saying “I am so sorry @KDSindhi Sir, I was just copying a character done by @Iamsajalali (One of my favt. actresses) , didn’t want to hurt you or anyone from #Hindu community,” she wrote.

The anchors too have since apolgised for laughing at her on the show and not taking a stand for the HIindu community. In response to her tweet, Kapil Dev was accepting of her apology and said, “Tweeple Power. So, @iNimraAli and both tv anchorpersons of @gnnhdofficial @AyeshaViews & @umairbashirGNN have realised their mistakes and apologised with Hindu community in response to my tweet. Their realisation of the mistake & prompt apology is appreciated,” he said.
