Air India plane crash lands, leaving at least 3 dead

Being a year of one bad news after another, yet another tragedy has occurred. An Air India jet crash which was en route from Dubai to Kerala crash landed in the southern city of Calicut as it came in to land during heavy rainfall. According to Reuters, there were a total of 191 passengers and crew members on board, including 10 infants.

The aircraft is believed to have split into two as it crashed and rescue efforts are currently underway. “The plane fuselage split into two as it overshot the runway and fell into a valley, television networks said. A statement released by the civil aviation ministry said, “As per the initial reports rescue operations are on and passengers are being taken to hospital for medical care.” It went on to add that there was no fire on board.

As per initial reports, a rescue operation is currently underway and the injured passengers are being transported to hospitals for immediate medical attention. It is yet to be ascertained whether more passengers will succumb to their injuries. It is further being said that visibility at the time of landing was reduced which is what could have caused the accident.

Moments after the crash, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to pen a heartfelt condolence for the victims of the crash. “Pained by the plane accident in Kozhikode. My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest,” he said. He went on to add, “Spoke to Kerala CM @vijayanpinarayi Ji regarding the situation. Authorities are at the spot, providing all assistance to the affected.”
