Ali Zafar’s Defamation Case: Twitter Questions Why Lawyers Didn’t Show Up

Meesha Shafi and Ali Zafar’s court case resumed last month with the latter’s lawyer posting about the same on Twitter. Ambreen Qureshi wrote, “Defamation case against #MeeshaShafi finally resumed in court after months. However, no witnesses were produced by the defendant. Adjournment was sought by opposition counsel. Hon’ judge has ordered them to produce witnesses for cross examination on next date of hearing on 28th. #MeToo.” She attached a picture of the legal document that mentioned the next hearing was scheduled for September 28, 2020. Now, it has been revealed that there was a no-show from Shafi’s lawyers and witnesses at today’s hearing.

“AZ Defamation Case against #MeeshaShafi. LIVE COURT UPDATE. Once again, NO SHOW from Meesha Shafi, or any of her witnesses & lawyers in the court so far. Apparently, the lawyer has sent message through Munshi that he is not available today, this week and the next week,” posted Dubai-based journalist Mahwash Ajaz, a strong advocate of the #MeToo movement and someone who has been extremely vocal in the Zafar-Shafi case.

She added, “Ali Zafar’s lawyers waiting for judge to arrive and give next order.” The same happened in September 2019, when Shafi’s counsel did not appear in court and her lawyer Saqib Jalani requested for more time to prepare for the cross-examination of Zafar. The Channo singer then sought for damages for Shafi’s alleged attempt at maligning his reputation and causing mental trauma. Reposting two articles from the time, Ajaz tweeted, “Although the burden of proof lies on Meesha, Ali Zafar had stated that he understands that it’s difficult for a genuine victim to prove her allegation. He is pursuing THIS legally b/c it will be proven that her intentions were malafide based on malicious intent.” Many other Twitter users also questioned why Shafi’s lawyers did not show up in court. I can’t believe this! Is it true that it’s a no show from @itsmeeshashafi and her witnesses?” asked one user. Another added, “I knew it! that’s what I said few days back! Either no show, adjournment, or lawyer will ask for time! I didn’t know everything will happen at the same time.”
