To put it simply, “Aulaad” is not for the faint of heart, those who cannot stomach watching vulnerable characters suffer at the hand of their loved ones. Because that’s exactly what’s happening in “Aulaad,” as viewers watch, week after week, its lead parental pair being mistreated by greedy, manipulative individuals not only surrounding them, but living in their own house – “people” they’ve loved, raised and supported, their own children. Written by Syed Ameer Ali Shah and directed by Aabis Raza, “Aulaad” stars Mohammad Ahmed, Marina Khan, Hassan Niazi, Sunita Marshal, Nabeel Zuberi, Furqan Qureshi and Humaira Bano. At present, Muskaan has entered the household as Bilal’s wife and has not wasted a moment in proving that she’s the daughter-in-law from hell.
In episode 12, as the family works hard to gather finances to prepare for Roshna’s (Minsa Malik) wedding. The last thing they need during these tough times is for anything else to go wrong – and yet, things do go wrong, because how can they not go wrong with a daughter-in-law like Muskaan? Muskaan, after seeing Zakiya’s (Marina Khan) one set that she had set aside for Roshna’s wedding, decides that she must have that set. So while the family is out, Muskaan steals the set, only to be caught by Moni (Qudsia Ali). While she does feed Moni a story, Moni’s mouth cannot remain sealed for long and when the family is seen searching frantically for the necklace, Moni exposes Muskaan’s act. Of course, this blows up into a war of words when Muskaan not only refuses to admit to her wrong-doing, but also gaslights the entire family by accusing them of throwing false accusations and leaving the home (and her insufferable husband) behind in “anger.” Later, mother and daughter are seen admiring the stolen necklace and greedily plotting to sell it.
I suppose one has to have encountered a character like Muskaan in order to find her believable, but when one has not encountered a person this conniving, viscous and manipulative in reality, it’s a difficult character to grasp. Muskaan and her mother are genuinely nasty people and, therefore, it’s so difficult to even feel sorry for Bilal (Nabeel Zuberi) with the way this duo is manipulating him against his own family and robbing him blind in the name of “love.” Does Muskaan love Bilal? While it initially did seem so, this cannot be termed love in any sense of the word. But would anyone feel sorry for him? Absolutely not, as while Muskaan may be the villain in his life, he is the true villain in the lives of his parents, listening to his wife and supporting her over his parents well-being.

In the next episode, Jalal and Zakiya, wonderfully played by Mohammad Ahmed and Marina Khan, will be thrown out of their own home by Muskaan and Bilal while Roshna’s wedding falls apart. What comes across as a tiny sliver of hope is that Jalal’s friend has gotten him a job as a professor. Independence and a financial stream makes all the difference and this is where these parents are suffering, so this is the light at the end of the tunnel at the present moment. And yet, it’s so difficult to see how badly Bilal and Khurram have treated their own parents. We will have to wait and see how this story continues to play out – and when life will fall back into place for Jalal and Zakiya. Overall, “Aulaad” is a heavy watch, but is a show one simply cannot look away from.
