“Aulaad” tells an important story about the relationship between parents and their children. While parents spend their entire lives raising their children, do children owe it to their parents to pick up and return the favor once their parents no longer can? Written by Syed Ameer Ali Shah and directed by Aabis Raza, “Aulaad” stars Mohammad Ahmed, Marina Khan, Hassan Niazi, Sunita Marshal, Nabeel Zuberi, Furqan Qureshi and Humaira Bano in prominent roles.
Episode five picks up where four left off. Muskaan has called Bilal (Nabeel Zuberi) and filled his head with her rants against his brother and parents, telling him that they insulted her mother. If Khurram (Hassan Niazi) proved himself to be a selfish, money-minded, self-serving son, Bilal is his brother after all. He takes things to the next level. He lashes out at his parents as they arrive back home, believing genuinely that signing their home over to his to-be wife is a logical demand. At this point, there is only one sensible son and that’s Adnan (Furqan Qureshi). Seeing his parents being verbally assaulted by Bilal, he steps in and thus begins a physical fight between the two brothers. Jalal (Mohammad Ahmed) and Zakiya (Marina Khan) are the parents now caught between their children. Jalal does his best to tear the duo apart, expressing his anger at both and blaming his own abilities as a parent.
However, as a parent, one does realize how much they must rely on their grown children when Jalal receives the electricity bill and realizes he cannot pay it. He speaks to his children and while Adnan does not refuse, he does make it clear that his paycheck cannot cover this sort of bill each month – but does come to Jalal’s rescue despite his wife’s displeasure. In this trio of sons, Adnan is the one who seems to pull through for his parents each time and supports them. Urwa, Adnan’s wife, may be lazy, but she doesn’t appear to be a bad person. In fact, in this entire discussion, she has never said to transfer the house in her name or Adnan’s name. The only issue she has is securing her financial future and living a life suitable to her young son – and there’s nothing wrong with this demand. But with it clear that Bilal will marry Muskaan despite this glitch, how long will it take for Muskaan to create trouble in the household and force Urwa and Adnan to react? On the other end, Afreen (Sunita Marshal) finds herself in trouble when her son is hurt and Khurram (Hassan Niazi) does not answer the phone. She reaches out to her in-laws, but to no avail – though it appears they will visit the hospital in the next episode after much thought.

Here it must be said that while Khurram is a poor excuse for a son, there’s certainly something to be said about certain qualities in Jalal. Now whether this is an intentional bit in the writing or not, that’s not clear. But Jalal has his own flaws, his own ego and problems that hold him back. When he goes to visit his grandson in the hospital, he rejects Afreen’s phone calls repeatedly, telling Zakiya they will not go. He disowned his son and his entire family over a fight. And with his one reasonable son left (Adnan), he lashes out and groups him with the rest. How long will Adnan go along with being unappreciated? The time will certainly come when he gets fed up and pushed along by his wife, will he ultimately split away from his parents as well? This was a good episode with Mohammad Ahmed and Furqan Qureshi’s performances standing out the most. This is honestly where “Aulaad” is winning, depicting situations that would come up within join family systems – and it’s true that when children grow up and become adults, there can be a clash of egos between father and sons.
