As the episodes go on, “Aulaad” is becoming more difficult to watch – and it’s not simply because the parents are being mistreated by selfish children. It’s also because the parents themselves are negative characters. Not only do they not think their decisions through, they are also unfair to their children. This is an unfairness that can be seen a mile away, so how could Jalal and Zakiya not recognize their behavior? Written by Syed Ameer Ali Shah and directed by Aabis Raza, “Aulaad” stars Mohammad Ahmed, Marina Khan, Hassan Niazi, Sunita Marshal, Nabeel Zuberi, Furqan Qureshi and Humaira Bano.
In episode 9, Bilal’s (Nabeel Zuberi) wedding preparations are in full swing. Of course, Jalal (Mohammad Ahmed) and Zakiya (Marina Khan) have hidden the house situation from their children. However, after a chance encounter with a friend, Khurram (Hassan Niazi) realizes what’s going on and confronts the duo at Bilal’s mayyon. Obviously this does not go well as not only is Khurram furious at having his “right” taken away from him, but Adnan (Furqan Qureshi) is rightfully angry considering he had already put his conditions down earlier. After a heavy confrontation with his sons, Jalal decides to make up for the situation by giving his other two children his provident fund. While Khurram and Bilal are the terrible human beings they are, Adnan seems visibly disturbed by this decision and is deeply uncomfortable accepting the check. Still, life goes on and Muskaan – the devil herself – enters the house as Bilal’s wife. It doesn’t take long for her to show her true colors though. After Moni suffers an attack and Muskaan blows the money for her medication on an outfit, Muskaan makes it clear that Bilal can’t afford Moni’s medication and won’t be responsible for it anymore. This scene is rather sick, not only because Muskaan’s words are disgusting and terrible, but also because more than Muskaan, Bilal is a truly evil character. How can one sit there and listen to his wife speak so terribly to his parents and use such derogatory words about his own sister who he claims to love? Bilal is a character that viewers would really love to see punished in the long run. And yet, is Zakiya’s way of speaking to her daughter-in-law appropriate? It’s true that it’s not the place for a parent to ask a married man about his financials when he’s not willing to disclose that information. Yes, it’s Bilal’s responsibility to provide what he is responsible for, but is it Zakiya’s business to know where he spends each cent?
Let’s go back to Khurram’s anger at his “right” being taken away – and this also fits in with Jalal and Zakiya’s selfish, unlikable behavior. Not once do these parents stop and think “Wait, we have five children.” No, they do not even consider their daughters in this situation, rather the daughters are simply “obligations,” individuals that need to be cared for until one gets married and the other…….? It’s so painful to watch daughters being treated this way, because at the end of the day, they are the ones caring for their parents. It shouldn’t be about Rushna’s wedding or Moni’s medication – it should be about these girls having enough to live off of without having to beg their brothers to take care of them. Why don’t they have any rights? This is terrible. Even if these parents are so selfish to write off their living, breathing daughters, in what world did they believe they could give their home to their one young son and expect the other two to happily accept this decision. Logically speaking, Bilal has never supported the parents financially while Khurram (as much of a jerk as he is) has and Adnan now does. So why are these sons expected to sit idle and watch their inheritance taken away by their brother’s wife? Their fears were completely valid looking at Muskaan’s behavior at the end of the episode – she will turn Farwa and Adnan out as soon as possible….and Jalal and Zakiya as well.

Overall, episode 9 has moved “Aulaad” into the realm of being difficult to watch. At this point, I’m only holding on to see Adnan and Afreen (Sunita Marshal), as they are likable characters. It has to be said that Adnan is the son Jalal and Zakiya would deserve if they were actually fair to all their children, but it will be completely understandable if Adnan takes his family and leaves the house. We’ll have to see how this show plays out, but it’s not for those who are emotional.
