Former model Ayyan Ali was arrested on March 14, 2015, after reportedly attempting to smuggle $506,800 into the United Arab Emirates while bypassing the Airports Security Force personnel at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport in Islamabad. She was later given bail and had been absent from the scene since. In a recent development, however, the Islamabad High Court has now rejected the petition of the Customs Department to initiate a fresh smuggling inquiry under the Anti-Money Laundering Act against Ali. Justice Ghulam Azam Qambrani announced the reserved verdict, reported The Express Tribune.
In 2016, a customs court had rejected the department’s application to conduct another inquiry against Ali in the money laundering case. Customs claimed that she was smuggling dollars and challenged the decision in the high court. Following Ali’s imprisonment in 2015, she was indicted by the Customs court in November 2015 for attempting to smuggle the money. However, she pleaded not guilty.

Ali missed 45 court hearings, after which the court issued her arrest warrant and declared her “most wanted,” ordering her property to be confiscated. Ali’s lawyer had sought time for her to surrender but Judge Arshad Hussain Bhutta had turned down his request. On February 29, 2020, Ali returned on the micro-blogging site Twitter. Her sudden reappearance was noticed by all and she then released her debut album Nothing Like Everything on August 3, 2020.
