“Bandhay Ek Dour Se” is a show that showed much promise not only with the writer-director team of Farhat Ishtiaq and Ali Faizan, but also with the phenomenal cast. Starring Ahsan Khan, Ushna Shah, Hina Altaf, Saba Hameed, Saba Faisal, Samina Ahmed, Noor Hassan and many other promising actors, this drama took off at full speed with an engaging story, interesting characters and lovable supporting characters in the form of the family members. However, at some point, the characters – particularly Maheen and Umar – lost their sense of rationality and became unable to communicate with each other, a hard pill to swallow for viewers.
At present, we see Maheen (Ushna Shah) at home with her family while Roshni (Hina Altaf) and Umar (Ahsan Khan) plot how to move forward and bring Roshni into his family. While Razia (Saba Hameed) and Fareed (Noor Ul Hassan) are recuperating in the hospital, Munas (Ali Rizvi) becomes vocal about his disdain towards Roshni’s presence at the hospital. He badgers Maheen regarding why her so-called friend is loitering around at the hospital with Umar on a daily basis – and, of course, Maheen avoids answering. It’s frustrating to watch this, because while one wants Maheen’s family to be supportive, they also don’t have any reason to be considering she isn’t telling them the real story. Munas is proving to be a good brother, one who is genuinely trying to get to the bottom of things. On the other end, Zakiya (Saba Hameed) is growing increasingly frustrated with her daughter’s behavior, as her reasoning for leaving Umar does not add up.
Fortunately, Maheen receives a visit from Zubeidaa (Saima Qureshi) who tries to talk her into going back to Umar. It must be said that Zubeidaa is a really endearing character. She’s intelligent, supportive of those around her and is kind-hearted. She does her best to offer good advice, but accidentally reveals the details of what transpired between Roshni and Nabeel to Maheen. Seeing Maheen’s shock, Zubeidaa begs her not to tell Roshni and while Maheen promises, things have certainly changed from this point on. Maheen is now aware that Roshni was lying and did, in fact, betray Umar. Armed with this knowledge, Maheen packs her bags and heads back to Umar’s house. She has made up her mind to reclaim her position and put Roshni in her place.

Unfortunately, “Bandhay Ek Dour Se” is telling a story that should be irrelevant in the time we are living in. With the number of times Roshni has spoken badly to Maheen or even admitted to lying or tried to come between the (married) two, one would think Maheen would use modern-day technology to expose the overly confident Roshni. This poses to be a huge loophole that a girl like Maheen, who was initially shown as kind-hearted, but intelligent with a voice, would not utilize the record option on her phone to expose Roshni’s lies. Looking at the preview for next week, this will be yet another opportunity lost I’m sure. Everyone from Ushna Shah, Ahsan Khan and all the supporting actors (particularly impressed with Madiha Rizvi and Kamran Jilani) are performing incredibly well and leaving their mark. But the problem is that there is absolutely zero communication happening between the main characters – and it’s illogically so. While Roshni may be manipulative, there’s a point where the other two characters can sit down and talk thing out properly. Instead, Umar is shown giving Maheen attitude for every word – and then acts as though he’s giving her respect as his wife. It’s hard to digest and that makes the show, overall, difficult to digest as well. One hopes Umar and Maheen begin showing some sign of intelligence soon or there will be little about this show to remember.
