#BanNidaYasir: Pakistani talk show host comes under fire for taking advantage of suffering family

Social media has become rather vast and is now our go to for anything. Be it news, fashion, lifestyle, for research purposes, to kick start a movement or to make something trend; social media is your answer. Social media has become an extremely powerful tool and is also a great source of information and brings to light a variety of topics and knowledge to the forefront. Social media has been especially instrumental in Pakistan in recent days following the Lahore motorway gang rape which led to a rise in the number of protests which broke out across the country.

Similarly, it had earlier brought to light the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl Marwah, whose burnt body was found wrapped in a cloth on the property of a former milk plant in Karachi. Her body was found two days after she was reported missing. The police report states that she had been kidnapped and raped before being murdered and torched. According to the autopsy report, the victim had been sexually assaulted and had died from head injuries.

And now, just a few short weeks following the horrific incident, Good Morning Pakistan, ARY’s long-running morning show hosted by Nida Yasir welcomed the family of the young girl on to the show. Following the episode, the show has come under fire and this is not the first time the show has been heavily criticised. Nida Yasir invited the family of the young girl to discuss the details pertaining to the tragic incident, before which she sympathised with the family and offered her condolences. Her aim was to get the case the attention it deserves and believed it could give rise to a possibility of any eye-witnesses coming forward.

Nida Yasir questioned Marwah’s father and grandparents and the questions ranged from details of the incident to the help they have or haven’t been receiving from authorities. During the show, the grandparents, together with Nida Yasir broke down and cried on multiple occasions as the topic was discussed.

A reporter of the local TV channel was also present to provide further details and updates of the investigation. It couldn’t have been easy for the family to come on national television to relive those horrifying moments all over again, and owing to the highly sensitive nature of the issue, the emotions on the episode were at an all time high. While Nida Yasir did take into consideration the sensitivity of the issue, there were several times during the episode where Nida could have intervened and spared the family of the victim more emotional trauma.

Since the airing of the show, a number of segments from the episode have come under fire on social media for the lack of sensitivity towards the family and the probing questions being asked for the sake of ratings. Social media users have gone as far as saying that the show was designed specifically as a rating gimmick. Nida Yasir has been heavily criticised for fishing for dramatic content by giving her a platform to speak when the lady was not in control of her emotions. The family continues to suffer from the trauma and the show was a reminder of the harrowing events of the day she was found.

Not only did Nida Yasir receive flak on social media, but on other social media platforms too, including Twitter and Instagram. PEMRA has also been requested to ban the show. Angry netizens had much to say about the show with the hashtag #BanNidaYasir trending on the micro-blogging site. “All the morning shows and game shows should be banned. These are just to make fun of poor people and spread vulgarity,” wrote one user while another wrote, “The Program “Morning Show” and Nida Yasir, both should be banned on instant notice by #Pemra because this program is always scripted on disgusting things. They are promoting Indecency through screen.”

Another anger user shared the same sentiments and wrote, “Nida Yasir, host of ‘Good morning Pakistan’, in her disgusting appetite for ratings called parents of Marwah & went on to ask merciless questions, reliving the pain & agony of parents.”

People have been irked by the lack of sensitivity shown by the host and have called for the banning of her show. “#BanNidaYasir she has been doing this for so long playing with the emotions of poor for sake of rating,” said one user.
