“Bikhray Moti” has been described by many as a show that breeds misery. And yet, this is a show that manages to keep viewers hooked in the hopes that the main characters will eventually head down a road to happiness. Starring Yasir Nawaz, Neelam Muneer, Wahaj Ali, Samina Ahmed and many others, the show focuses on the importance of present parenting and the grief neglected children can face when left at the mercy of those waiting to take advantage of their helplessness.
As episode 18 begins, Zulfi (Yasir Nawaz) is seen drowning under the weight of his actions. In a moment of clarity, he realizes that he has failed his entire family – including Faiza (Nausheen Shah). Recalling how Faiza would ask him to pay attention to his children and love them, Zulfi is pained by the thought that he gave preference to his scheming mother and manipulative brother over his own family. This is a sweet moment where the viewer finds themselves wondering if it’s possible for Ayeza (Neelam Muneer) to find happiness with Zulfi. Would that be the ideal choice or would that send a message for women to compromise yet again? And yet, is drug addition that easily discarded or curbed? The answer is no and it’s great to see how the team has put thought into that. Zulfi’s remorse and statements of the night disappear when he stumbles across his “friends” and easily succumbs to peer pressure. Yasir Nawaz is doing a wonderful job of playing this irresponsible, abusive man trying to drag himself bag to the right path.
Ayeza manages to locate Shehzaadi’s whereabouts through the matchmaker and asks Zulfi to accompany her but is dismayed to see that he is under the influence and leaves without him. At her new home, Shehzaadi struggles to perform her duties as a new wife. Ghulam’s (Saleem Mairaj) wife and daughter bond in a stand-out moment. While Ghulam’s first wife is ill and angry at his second wife, her daughter struggles to pacify her by asking her to stay present for her sake. She describes how Shehzaadi has ended up in this situation due to her mother’s death and the loss of parental support and asks her mother to stay there to protect her. Again, highlighting the importance of present parents, it’s here that Ghulam’s wife puts aside her anger and realizes not only the importance of her presence in her daughter’s life, but also the stand she must take on Shehzaadi’s behalf. Playing savior, she takes the young girl under her wing and, when Ayeza arrives to meet Shehzaadi, she instructs her to take the girl away before Ghulam’s return. While Shehzaadi is happily reunited with Ayeza and Jaanu, Zulfi’s guilt continues to plague him for not coming to her aide.

Ahad (Wahaj Ali) continues to mourn the loss of Ayeza and waits in hopes that he can rescue her from her present situation – and Ayeza’s mother stands with him. Ayeza’s mother has had enough of her husband’s mistreatment and, finally, decides to walk away from the marriage, leaving her husband wringing his hands, helpless and lost. While many may say “Why would she do this to herself in her old age?”, this choice sends such a great message to women – it’s never too late to search for peace and happiness, away from the misery inflicted upon them by their unappreciative, abusive spouses.
The storyline with Jaanu only seems to be headed for more misery. While Jaanu has happily resumed going to school, it seems his attacker has found his way onto the school grounds and will attempt to kidnap him once again. This track is frustrating and upsetting, but viewers find themselves invested in Jaanu’s happiness. “Bikhray Moti” is certainly a heavy show and not for those seeking something light-hearted, but the show does offer a lot in terms of giving viewers something to think about.
