Bikhray Moti Episode 7: Neelam Muneer and Wahaj Ali Win Hearts

“Bikhray Moti” is not easy viewing by any means.  Telling a story that centers largely around child abuse in various forms, this is a show that has a grim tone throughout.  However, it’s a story that is important to be told – and should be watched by drama viewers.  With Neelam Muneer, Wahaj Ali and Yasir Nawaz leading the cast, the story focuses on an abusive husband and father (played by Yasir Nawaz) who mistreats his own children after their mother’s death.  Neelam Muneer plays the aunt of the children, a young girl who steps in to shield the children from their father’s abuses.

In episode 7, Ayeza (Neelam Muneer) and Ahad (Wahaj Ali) continue to fight for their relationship as Ahad rebels against his controlling father and declares he will marry Ayeza with or without his consent.  Leaving his enraged father behind, Ahad tells Ayeza that they must elope.  Ayeza, being the responsible soul she is, tells Ahad she will think about it, but she is not in favor of the decision.  Their love story is one that viewers want to root for, but can also see how the odds are stacked against them.  Ayeza’s family situation is dire and despite Ayeza being vocal, her father can easily lure her into a marriage with Zulfi (Yasir Nawaz) under the guise of protecting the children.  It’s unfortunate and painful to watch, because Ayeza and Ahad’s relationship is a strong, supportive one with genuine love and loyalty towards one another.  They deserve to be together, but their lives have something else in store.

 

Coming to the children, Jaanu is mistreated by his uncle’s wife who does not approve of her son associating with Jaanu, deeming Jaanu to be “lesser than.”  The most disturbing scene here arrives when Jaanu, while working at his uncle’s video shop, is propositioned by a man.  The man asks Jaanu to watch a film with him and while Jaanu has a good head on his shoulders and tries to shake him off, the man settles for buying Jaanu’s trust in the form of chocolate – for now.  This scene speaks volumes of the horrors Jaanu may come to experience.  Will Ayeza come to Hyderabad and rescue Jaanu before he is sent down a path of child labour and abuse?  Again, the child actor who plays Jaanu needs to be praised for his acting skills.  He manages to convey Jaanu’s inner thoughts with just an expression and when he is on-screen, it’s impossible to take your eyes off of him.

Shehzaadi resumes her job in a house as domestic help, but falls ill and faints.  The household Shehzaadi is working for ends up being the home of Ayeza’s classmate, the same one who made a video against using children as domestic help.  This character has only featured in a couple of episodes so far, but he is already representing the face of a real problem in Pakistan.  There is much hypocrisy surrounding this topic with many who claim to be against the practice still hiring young children to work in their households.  It’s also interesting to hear his mother scold him for taking Shehzaadi to the hospital, telling him that he should do social work with people of “his calibre,” making another statement about how the rich in Pakistan choose to “help.”

 

While most of this episode focuses on Wahaj Ali and Neelam Muneer, both doing a fabulous job performing, trouble looms large for this on-screen couple  With Zulfi now showing an interest in Ayeza, it’s only a matter of time before Ayeza finds herself in Zulfi’s home as his wife.  Will Shehzaadi and Jaanu find their way back to a “normal” family life or will Zulfi and his (evil) mother destroy these childhoods with their vindictive attitudes?
