Britney Spears’ father will continue as her conservator till 2021

Earlier this week, it was reported that Britney Spears had requested the court to remove her father as her conservator – one who would control all her personal and business affairs. The conservatorship was appointed by a Los Angeles court and has been in place for 12 years. A conservatorship is a legal concept in the United States whereby a guardian or a protector is appointed by a judge to manage the financial affairs and/or daily life of another due to physical or mental limitations, or old age.

The Toxic singer had asked for her manager to replace her father, Jamie Spears, as her conservator instead, however, in latest developments, the court has not allowed for this to happen. The arrangements for her conservatorship to remain with her father have now been extended till February 2021, a document circulating on social media states. While this may be stated on the document, it is yet to be ascertained whether the document is authentic.

It was in 2008 that the pop star was admitted to hospital for psychiatric treatment after which her father was appointed conservator. Jamie Spears suffered from ill health in between and during this period her care manager Jodi Montgomery took charge as conservator in temporary capacity.

Britney Spears’ lawyer submitted documents stating that the singer was “strongly opposed” to having her father continue to control her affairs, reasons for which were not stated in the document. While Britney Spears managed to revive her career following her breakdown, she pulled out at the last minute from a Las Vegas concert and briefly entered a mental health facility. She has not performed publicly since October 2018.

Diehard Britney Spears fans have been very vocal about her and started the #FreeBritney movement which created quite the buzz across social media. A demonstration campaign was also held during which slogans like “The conservatorship has got to go!” were chanted. Her fans believe that she is being kept as a prisoner against her will and that she has been sending cryptic signals and messages via social media to be freed.

“I’m here to support Britney and I believe that she deserves her basic civil rights and to be able to spend her money on her terms,” said Timothy, 26, a die hard fan who flew from Minneapolis for the rally. Britney Spears has not publicly commented on the campaign but her father has dismissed it as a joke.
