Britney Spears wants father to be removed as her conservator

Following the #FreeBritney movement, pop singer Britney Spears wants her father to be removed as the individual who controls her business and personal affairs, which will be a major change to her 12-year court-appointed conservatorship. A conservatorship is a legal concept in the United States whereby a guardian or a protector is appointed by a judge to manage the financial affairs and/or daily life of another due to physical or mental limitations, or old age.

The 38-year-old singer’s lawyer filed documents ahead of a court hearing in Los Angeles which stated that the singer is “strongly opposed to having James (Spears) return as a conservator of her person.” The document outlines no reasons for her stance. It was back in 2008 that Jamie Spears was appointed conservator after the pop star’s life spiralled out of control and she was hospitalised for psychiatric treatment.

Making a comeback, the Hit Me Baby One More Time singer pulled out of a Las Vegas concert residency last year and briefly entered a mental health facility. The pop singer has not been able to perform publicly since October 2018 and court documents said it was “her stated desire not to perform at this time.”

The eight-year-long conservatorship for the former teen pop phenomenon has come under scrutiny, after which the #FreeBritney campaign was coined by fans. According to Britney Spears loyalists, she is being kept as a prisoner and is sending cryptic signals begging to be freed through her social media accounts, which usually consist of selfies or her dancing at home. A demonstration has also been planned outside the downtown Los Angeles courthouse and fans have welcomed the news of her request to remove her father as her conservator.

“We know our girl #FreeBritney happy with the news today! A huge step,” tweeted Junior Olivas, one of her most ardent fans. Britney Spears now wants control over her affairs to be given to her care manager, Jodi Montgomery, who was made a temporary conservator last year after Jamie Spears suffered a bout of ill health, according to the court documents.

Jamie Spears has dismissed the #FreeBritney campaign as a joke.

“All these conspiracy theorists don’t know anything,” Jamie Spears was quoted as saying to the New York Post earlier this month. “It’s up to the court of California to decide what’s best for my daughter. It’s no one else’s business.”
