BTS: Korean Pop Act Tops Billboard Charts Following ‘Dynamite’ Success

Popular for their good looks and picture-perfect dance moves, Korean band Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS) has garnered a massive fan following across the globe. The troupe has become a household name in the global music industry and are liked by people from all age groups, especially teenagers. The seven-member boy band has become one of South Korea’s best-known and most valuable musical exports. Some of their notable works include Boy With Luv, MIC Drop, Blood Sweat & Tears, Dynamite, DNA and IDOL among others. In a not so surprising development, the K-Pop band has ranked number one in the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts in the United States.

BTS has become the first Korean pop act to debut at No 1, reported Reuters. It released the song Dynamite on August 21, 2020, only to find out that the single had become a soaring hit in a short span of time. It is BTS’ first song fully recorded in English, featuring elements of funk and soul. Dynamite sold 265,000 downloads in its first week, marking the biggest pure sales week since Taylor Swift’s Look What You Made Me Do back in 2017.

The Billboard Hot 100 singles chart combines US streaming, radio airplay and sales data. BTS was founded in 2013, eventually diving in to the United States market three years ago and attracting listeners with its pumpy and upbeat tunes. South Korean solo artist PSY reached a No 2 Hot 100 best with his viral hit Gangnam Style in 2012. Although the band had previously broken into the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching the No 4 spot with its March release, Monday marked the first time it debuted at No 1. The band on Sunday performed at the MTV Video Music Awards show for the first time and won four trophies, including Best Group and Best Pop Group.
