“Chalawa” started off as an engaging show about the supernatural, a show different from everything else on air. Starring Naveen Waqar, Samina Ahmed, Naveed Raza, Ali Ansari and Noor Khan, “Chalawa” has been written by Shahid Nizami and directed by Najaf Bilgrami. Recently though, the show has moved to the younger generation and has lost the appeal earlier episodes had.
“Chalawa” started off as a very interesting concept with some excellent performances from Naveen Waqar and Samina Ahmed. However, as the show has progressed with the next generation, it has now turned into a weird “ghostly” love quadrangle. Sarnaash (the Chalawa), Harib and Sarosh are all vying for Savera’s love. Savera (Noor Khan) has “friendzoned” Sarnaash to an unpalatable extent, ready to marry Harib (Ali Ansari), but also scared of losing Sarnaash, a friend who spends all night in her bedroom. What kind of toxic friendship is this?
Professor Hamdani (Adnan Jaffar) continues to use Sarosh to his advantage, but it’s really not clear what he’s trying to do. Spy on Savera? Get his own chalawa to marry Savera? Whatever it is, it seems like a forced angle at this point and nothing is really coming of it other than seeing Sarosh spying on Mahnoor, her mother-in-law and Savera from random corners of different households. Sarosh visits Harib and tells him about Sarnaash and Savera, which pushes Harib to break off their engagement, which leaves Savera perplexed. Later, when Savera confronts Sarosh about visiting Harib, he denies the entire exchange, which leads to the trio meeting and trying to get to the bottom of the situation. Savera watches Harib’s footage of his conversation with Sarosh, who is no longer visible on the video, and informs him that he was never speaking to a human being, which leaves both Harib and Sarosh spooked.

What’s clear by the end of the episode is that Sarosh is innocent and never visited Harib to tell him about Sarnaash. But what’s no longer clear is Sarnaash’s innocence. While Sarnaash has always loved Savera, is he a good spirit as Savera’s been thinking and as we’ve been tuned to think? Or is Sarnaash the same chalawa Gulkand has been warning her about all along? Was Sarosh possessed by Sarnaash himself? This is where the show is becoming more interesting and intriguing. That being said, that does not mean “Chalawa” remains a solid show. It has become rather dull with Noor Khan’s character leading the show now. We will have to see if things improve later on.
