“Chalawa” has been in an odd place lately story-wise, the theme moving away from terror and taking a turn for the bizarre. Fortunately, the story picks up in episode 15. Starring Naveen Waqar, Samina Ahmed, Naveed Raza, Ali Ansari and Noor Khan, “Chalawa” has been written by Shahid Nizami and directed by Najaf Bilgrami. Now with Harib and Savera’s relationship once again on the mend, headed towards marriage, how will both Sarosh and the “chalawa” react?
In episode 15, we see how Sarosh has been taken over by a Jinn, to the point that he no longer remembers where he has been. Professor Hamdani (Adnan Jaffar) is controlling him, this much is clear, but what exactly his goal is to achieve through Sarosh is a different discussion. Sarosh is in love with Savera (Noor Khan), but his actions no longer have anything to do with that relationship. Rather, it seems Hamdani is using Sarosh’s family connection to Savera to find his way into his home. Savera visits Sarosh’s mother and informs her of his behavior and that he is being possessed by something unseen. But, as always, Sarosh’s mother considers Savera to be the culprit, brushing off her complaints. Can anyone really blame her though? Would Savera be anyone’s ideal daughter-in-law? It’s amazing that Harib (Ali Ansari) and his mother are so loving and accepting of Savera, Harib and Savera once again getting engaged and planning their wedding. While Savera and Harib plan their wedding, their happiness is short lived when, through Sarosh, Hamdani achieves something even viewers did not see coming. “Sarosh” murders Daadi (Samina Ahmed). This is a huge blow to the family and, to make matters worse, Sarosh’s mother has become aware that Sarosh had something to do with this murder.

Episode 15 does get on track a bit, steering the show back towards the “spooks” and less towards the bizarre discussions of armies and spirit wars. There’s a gripping moment when Harib’s house help encounters a Jinn in the kitchen, one that teases and plays with him, causing him to tremble with terror – and the audience as well. These scares are the strength of “Chalawa,” but lately, the story had taken an odd turn, leaving viewers less scared and more puzzled. However, things took a turn towards improvement this week and the story seems much more interesting at this point. Ali Ansari’s performance, along with Naveen Waqar’s, are the highlights of the show.
