#CloseAllPakZoos: Hamza Ali Abbasi Condemns Caging Animals For Public Entertainment

Kaavan, the loneliest elephant in the world left his home in Pakistan for Cambodia almost one month ago. While he was chained for almost all his life at Islamabad Zoo, several animal rights activists as well as international artists such as singer Cher fought for his freedom after witnessing his plight and the conditions he was kept in. They alleged he was mistreated in Pakistan and was not looked after the way he should have been. Soon after the relocation of Kaavan and several other animals who were housed in the wildlife sanctuary, Islamabad Zoo was shut down this week. Now, actor Hamza Ali Abbasi has voiced his concern over the mistreatment of animals, especially in Pakistan.

Taking to Instagram, Abbasi wrote, “Islamabad High Court (IHC) rules that Zoos are concentration camps for non-human living beings. Its TRUE. Caging animals for public entertainment is CRUEL and EVIL. Pakistan has a chance to earn respect of the world and make God happy by freeing all the animals in captivity and #CloseAllPakZoos PLEASE!”

He continued, “If you agree, please be the voice for those who can’t speak for themselves and make this hashtag trend for as long as we can so maybe someone in the decision-making arena may listen especially after IHC ruling. #CloseAllPakZoos.” Earlier this week, actor Mehwish Hayat raised her voice against the mistreatment of animals in zoos. “In a country where we’re still fighting for human rights, animal rights are a long way off. But come on, why do we only take action when foreign celebrities get involved? This is so embarrassing. Animals are born free- the authorities must shut these zoos now!” she said. Many other renowned stars have also spoken up about animal rights in the recent past, citing Kaavan’s example as a wakeup call.
