The UAE recorded 541 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, 31st August. This was the highest number of daily cases recorded in seven weeks. The country last reported more than 500 infections in a single day on 9th July, when 532 new cases were recorded. The highest number of cases recorded since the outbreak of coronavirus in the UAE was 994 on 22nd May.
The number of daily cases had declined in July but has seen an upward trend since the start of August. A total of 70,231 people have been infected in the country so far, with 60,931 recoveries. The authorities have also announced the death of two more COVID-19 patients, taking the death toll to 384.
Meanwhile, over 31,000 volunteers from 120 different nationalities are taking part in COVID-19 vaccine Phase 3 trials. They are undergoing regular monitoring and health checks, and have generated antibodies to fight the disease, according to the latest reports. The vaccine being administered was developed by China-based pharma company, Sinopharm, and the UAE was chosen for the third phase of its trial due to the country’s population diversity.
Praising the UAE leadership and volunteers for their contribution, the UAE Minister of Health and Prevention, Abdulrahman Al Owais said, “From the very outset the UAE leadership was totally committed to overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic through a global collaborative effort. The public-spirited nature of citizens and residents, and their willingness to volunteer is a powerful endorsement of the proactive approach the UAE has taken in what is a world-leading inactivated vaccine trials programme.

He further added that everyone involved in the trials, including the volunteers and the clinical and administrative staff, “can be enormously proud of what has been achieved already showing once again the sense of unity and shared purpose that has driven the nation for the past five decades.”
