Dubai has just launched a new medical research facility project worth AED 300 million. The Mohammad Bin Rashid Centre for Medical Research, part of the Al Jalila Foundation, is the UAE’s first independent multidisciplinary biomedical research centre. It will focus on research related to COVID-19 and other communicable diseases.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, inaugurated and toured the new facility on Tuesday, 11th August. During his visit, Sheikh Mohammad interacted with several scientists who shared their research projects with him.
Speaking about the new centre, Sheikh Mohammad said, “Everyone can access the Institute’s research. The new centre is an important addition to the global network of research institutions. It is part of the UAE’s contribution to biomedical research in the world and its research findings will be shared with other centres.”
He further added, “We need specialised centres to conduct research that caters to our environment and responds to the health challenges facing our region.”
The Mohammad Bin Rashid Centre for Medical Research has its own board of trustees and will focus on funding scientific projects and supporting specialised researchers. The country’s first medical research endowment is expected to bring a return on investment of 4 percent (AED 10.5 million) every year, which will be reinvested in healthcare and research projects.

The centre will form local and global partnerships with other research institutes specialising in medical innovation and biomedicine. It will help promote the use of artificial intelligence to monitor new diseases and design proactive plans to contain the spread of viruses. It will build an integrated medical database using big data analysis techniques to support international efforts to find effective treatments and vaccines for various diseases.
