Earlier this month, it was reported that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is eyeing to become one of the first nations in the world to administer the Covid-19 vaccination to most of its population. “With the dedicated effort of the UAE government to combat the pandemic, UAE may soon be the first country to vaccinate its entire population and hence, reach herd immunity,” said specialist in emergency medicine at Bareen International Hospital Fouad Al-Rahal told Al-Arabiya English. It now seems like the country is not too far away from achieving this goal. In latest news, the jab has already been given to all eligible taxi and public transport drivers in Dubai, which accounts for more than 20,000 individuals.
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) achieved this feat, in collaboration with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and other authorities. “RTA kicked off the campaign by alerting employees and encouraging them to take the vaccine shots provided at specialist health centres,” said Nada Jasim, Director of Safety, Risk, Regulation and Planning, Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector, RTA.

“Mass messages were broadcasted to employees via internal media channels urging them to take the vaccine during this exceptional time. RTA sorted employees who have completed the vaccination per sectors and agencies,” she added. Jasim disclosed that the RTA prepared two internal centres in collaboration with the Dubai Health Authority and other Authorities – one for vaccinating taxi and bus drivers from January 2021 to March 2021, and the other for vaccinating other employees as of February 3, 2021. “About 40,000 vaccination shots have been provided for drivers, front-end staff, metro and tram operators, parking inspectors and all employees along with their close family members,” she explained. Currently, Dubai is providing three kinds of locally and internationally approved vaccines.
