Covid-19 cases in Dubai witnessed a rapid surge following the opening of tourism towards the end of 2020. As the Gulf emirate enforced a stricter lockdown and revised precautionary guidelines in an attempt to combat the fast-spreading and contagious infection, several residents, restaurants and gyms among others, have failed to adhere to the new rules and have been held accountable for the same. The Dubai Municipality on Tuesday revealed that it has ordered the closure of 32 food establishments for violating safety measures to curb COVID-19, reported Gulf News. Moreover, it has issued warning notices to a total of 472 food outlets since the beginning of this year.
“Within 45 days since the beginning of this year, the municipality inspectors had carried out 5,841 field inspection visits to ensure that the food establishments are adhering to the procedures and controls set by the health authorities to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus,” said Sultan Al Taher, head of Food Inspection Section in the Municipality.

The most common violations discovered in restaurants were zero social distancing practices, the absence of masks and gloves during the preparation of food, inadequate sterilisation and disinfection materials and poor hygiene, added Al Taher. He noted that the Municipality checks all food establishments in Dubai were being checked regularly, including a thorough inspection of food riders across the emirate, to ensure they change their masks and gloves between each delivery order.
