Dil Ruba Episode 19: Sanam Finds a New Companion In Farhad

Writing about “Dil Ruba” week after week has become more of a chore meets rant rather than a review. Hania Amir is great in the role of Sanam, but what is the role of Sanam exactly? The way the main character has been written is difficult for viewers to even digest. She is a young girl who made silly mistakes and has been pushed into bad situation after bad situation. At this point though, Sanam’s behavior is bordering on unforgivable.

In episode 19, the terrible twosome are back in business. Who, you ask? Ghazala (Marina Khan) and Iram of course! Now that Arsalan is getting married to Sehrish, an explosion was bound to occur and viewers get exactly that when Ghazala and Iram realize Sehrish is related to Junaid (Shehroze Sabzwari). In a scene that’s downright ridiculous, Junaid’s mother (Huma Nawab) comes face to face with Ghazala and huffs and puffs in a very over-the-top way, making it known that she still blames Sanam. Okay lady, please give it a rest. Your son did not want to marry Sehrish, that is not Sanam’s fault. The way the minds work of the women on this show is on a different plane. Do they live on this earth? Do they have any concept of common sense? No, of course not and that’s depicted perfectly by Ghazala and Iram’s next plan of action. They decide they must keep Sehrish from meeting her family! Brilliant! So now not only do they look like terrible in-laws, but they’ve also incurred the newly-wed Sehrish’s wrath on the first day of her marriage. One hopes and prays that Sehrish is the daughter-in-law from hell who gives it back to both these women in the way they deserve for all their brainless, meddling ways. What was Marina Khan thinking taking this role?

Sanam (Hania Amir) is headed down a dangerous path with Farhad. Who is Farhad? Where did he come from? Where did he see her that he fell so head-over-heels in love with her? The entire situation is bizarre and it’s becoming more evident with this episode that Sanam is falling into a trap. On one end, Sanam is bringing out anger with her behavior towards her own child. She is beyond being a neglectful mother, she has given the entire responsibility of her child to the household help and even expects them to take him to the doctor. And while this side of her is turning ugly, it’s hard to hate Sanam completely, because she is a victim as well. She is a victim of the terrible twosome, more than anything. Her own mother and sister have created more problems for her than she ever deserved. Flirtations aside, did Sanam do anything unforgivable? No. But with her present situation, she has been left entirely alone and she is exactly that – lonely. She is seeking attention and she’s receiving it in the form of Farhad. Unfortunately for Sanam, it seems Farhad has been planted – but by who? Khurram and his new wife? It’s possible that now, with Farhad’s proposal of marriage, Sanam will ask for a divorce (or be accused of adultery), which may be a case for Khurram to get back his fortune.

Of course, Khurram (Syed Jibran) is an entirely different situation. How can the son of a successful businessman not have any inkling of simple things like, you know, signing contracts and documentation? Khurram is willing to go into business with his friend Sunny at a 50-50 partnership, despite the protests of his Uncle and has to be convinced otherwise. But will he listen? It’s clear that Sunny is up to no good and is planning on robbing Khurram blind, especially knowing that Khurram has no interest in being physically present at the place of business. Great. But again, do I feel sorry for Khurram? Of course not.

The biggest problem with “Dil Ruba” is that at this point….what are we supposed to want from this show? For Sanam to be happy? For Ghazala and Sanam to be reunited? For Khurram to “fix” himself? Do we want Junaid to be happy? The answer to all of the above is no. I don’t care. Does anyone care? There’s only one character on this show who really deserves happiness badly right now and that’s Sabeeh (Mohib Mirza). What exactly is endgame with this show – is it Sabeeh and Sanam? And does Sanam really deserve Sabeeh? Who knows, but one thing is for sure: “Dil Ruba” is a real disappointment of a show.
