“Dil Ruba” has been sinking in terms of content, week after week depicting more torture on Sanam and illogical behavior from the entire entourage of characters. A show that started off on a positive note, showing the flip-side of flirtations from the female perspective has essentially turned into a preaching of “if a man does this, it’s okay, but if a female does this, it’s a gunaah,” perpetuating the idea of South Asian double standards. While the performances have been good all-around, what is the point when the content is questionable?
Episode 21 begins with Shehnaaz (Huma Nawab) spewing hatred towards Sanam yet again while on the phone with Junaid. In a great moment, Junaid tells his mother off for her illogical behavior, incredulous that Shehnaaz would tell Sehrish about Sanam, considering Sehrish just married into Sanam’s family. Of course, Shehnaaz has several screws loose and does not recognize her own bad behavior, but continues to blame Sanam for everything under the sun. On the other end, Ghazala (Marina Khan) is set to destroy Arsalan’s marriage due to her own ego. The terrible twosome, Ghazala and Iram, continue to blame Sanam for all their problems, as though they didn’t create the entire situation. And while Sehrish does return home, she is no less of an insane character. Sehrish is still hung-up over Junaid, a man who never showed any interest in her, and has vowed to take revenge on Sanam. Oh joy, more fun is in store for Sanam now.
Sanam is proving herself to be the world’s worst mother, properly neglecting her child and for what reason? While Ayaan has fallen terrible ill, Sanam continues to pass off his care to the nanny despite being home and not having anything useful to do. Sanam is too busy lawyering up and despite their advice against the divorce, she stands adamant to divorce Khurram in order to marry Farhad. Sanam has been informed by her lawyers that getting a divorce from Khurram will also divorce her from her home, property and money. And yet there is a great point that Sanam makes about how her husband has been carrying on an affair under her nose and yet, when she is unhappy with her marriage and seeks a divorce to find happiness, she is being judged and called characterless by all around. This is not saying that Sanam’s actions are correct, but rather it’s coming back to the same double standard that has different rules for men and women.
Unfortunately, after Sanam divorces Khurram and searches for Farhad, he is nowhere to be found. Sanam is shocked to find Farhad with Natasha, Khurram’s wife and realizes she has been fooled. Though this was apparent to viewers, Hania Amir’s acting here is fabulous (probably the only highlight of the episode), showing yet another jolt for Sanam. One can say a lot of things about Sanam, but the girl has been through a lot of grief and it’s tragic to see how low she has fallen in her search for love. Farhad is right when he tells Sanam that she fell in love with him without even knowing who he was, where he came from or what he was about while Natasha tells her that she is either really naïve or really stupid. Unfortunately, at this point, their statements are correct.
“Just sign these papers.” These are famous last words and just go to show that Khurram (Syed Jibran) isn’t bright either. His friend Sunny convinces him to throw away the legalities involving his uncle to overlook their business deals, which makes it clear that Sunny is out to swindle Khurram of all his money and property. Khurram has spent his youth and, let’s be real, middle-age partying and having “fun,” so he doesn’t have any sense of what’s good for business and is willing to sign anything Sunny puts in front of him. While Natasha has been handling Sanam and ensuring the house and finances fall back into Khurram’s hands, it’s also clear that she has a deal with Farhad and Farhad expecting something from her – and Natasha isn’t denying him, so what exactly is she up to? Natasha appears to be a gold-digger who will leave Khurram as soon as she gets his finances under her own control and judging by Khurram’s ridiculous agreement with Sunny, she is most likely working with Sunny to do so. This will be entertaining to watch at least, as finally a guilty party will be seen suffering.

“Dil Ruba” cannot be classified as a “good” show and it’s becoming more grating watching this show week after week. However, the highlight are the few glimpses we are given of Sabeeh (Mohib Mirza) and his mother, the only logical characters on the entire show. If viewers like myself are sticking around for anything, it’s simply to see Sabeeh find happiness. That’s all – and if that happiness is with Sanam, there will be a lot of building up to make that scenario make sense.
