“Dil Ruba” is a show that started off with an interesting concept, but has gradually dissolved into a murky mess. Starring Hania Amir in the lead role, she has put her effort into playing the role, but the script has let her down at every turn. Written by Qaisra Hayat and directed by Ali Hassan, “Dil Ruba” continues to follow Sanam’s (miserable) life, heaping blame on her character for every mistake created by those around her. Episode 23 focuses on Sanam’s (Hania Amir) life and how she moves forward post-divorce. Viewers do briefly see Natasha, Saad and Farhad discussing their desire to get revenge on Khurram, but this angle has not only become uninteresting, it’s also irrelevant to the show now. On the other end, Junaid (Shehroze Sabzwari) as arrived back in Pakistan. Of course, this means only one thing – there’s more misery and trauma in store for Sanam.
Sabeeh continues to be the highlight of this show and Mohib Mirza’s performance has made Sabeeh all the more lovable. Sabeeh has always been clean of heart and even here, despite everything Sanam has done, Sabeeh decides to come to her aid. He has never seen Sanam as “bad,” but has been unable to come out of his mistrust after her betrayal. At this point though, he recognizes what she has been through and understands her need for love, support and forgiveness. Sabeeh has been an angel in disguise and has been the only character worth rooting for. While Ghazala (Marina Khan), Iram and Sanam’s father have no leg to stand on making this request, they are hopeful that Sabeeh will marry Sanam and he does not disappoint them. He makes the decision to marry Sanam and even convinces Samiya (Laila Wasti) despite her displeasure. Samiya’s angle is actually a realistic one and it must be said that it’s refreshing to see a character like Samiya being portrayed in such a positive way. She is a stepmother to Sabeeh, she is Sanam’s Phupo and she is well-off while her brother’s family is not. As far as dramas go, these are usually the ingredients for a highly manipulative, evil character. Instead, Samiya is the most genuine character on the show after Sabeeh, as well as consistent. Samiya may be angry now and unforgiving towards Sanam, but in her eyes, Sanam does deserve her anger – and don’t we, as the audience, think so as well? Sanam did neglect her son completely and practically had the baby at his death bed. Why would any loving family member allow that for their own flesh and blood? Samiya is actually a well-written character and that’s shown, once again, when she agrees to Sabeeh’s request to marry Sanam. She may be angry, but she truly does want what is best for her son.

What’s astounding is the preview for the next episode. It seems the family is waiting for Sabeeh and the images seem to suggest he’s involved in an accident. We also see Junaid confronting Sanam over her betrayal (will he please get over this already?). Is it possible that the creatives behind this show could stoop so low to kill off two brothers in the same way only to further increase Sanam’s misery? Are we eventually looking toward a Junaid & Sanam union? And if so, is that what anyone wants to see? The only thing one can hope at this point is that my analysis of the preview is entirely wrong – because if it isn’t, “Dil Ruba” will be remembered as a show that propagated poor concepts all around and will be a show better forgotten.
