“Dil Tanha Tanha” is a new show on Hum TV that has replaced “Tera Ghum Aur Hum” on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The show sees the return of Mohsin Abbas Haider to television after a break, along with Ali Ansari, Kiran Haq and Nazish Jahangir. It has been written by Misbah Ali Syed and directed by Ali Masood. Adeel, played by Mohsin Abbas Haider, is shown as having an interest in his cousin Mirha (Nazish Jehangir). Unfortunately, despite his persistence, Mirha and her family have no interest in his proposal. As the episode moves forward, one can see that Adeel has a problematic personality and is hell-bent on marrying Mirha, with or without her approval. Listening to the discussion between Adeel’s sibling, it’s clear that Adeel is a livewire sort of character who is very different from Mirha.
Kiran Haq is playing Tooba, a more demure, obedient version of the role she just played in “Ek Jhooti Love Story,” except the scenario seems to have been handled better in EJLS. Long hair, clean eyebrows and nailpolish are apparently reasons for rejection these days and this is what’s shown in one scene, leaving both Tooba and her mother broken-hearted. What kind of people are these? Since when are girls rejected for looking presentable? Here, we see Tooba falling victim to the typical aging woman trope, which would be fine if the characters surrounding her weren’t so over the top about it. Whether it’s her mother crying on the stairs after a rejected proposal or Tooba’s brother staring sadly into thin air after the same, the first episode already plays up this idea that one household revolves entirely around one subject and one subject only – marriage.

Because his older sister, Tooba, is unmarried, Asfand (Ali Ansari) is unable to propose to his long-time girlfriend, Mirha. As she brushes off Adeel’s proposal and those of others, Mirha is growing increasingly agitated by Asfand’s inability to get engaged/married and finally demands that he either commit or leave her. There’s a bizarre moment in the show where Asfand and Mirha are deep in discussion over their relationship and the stand-still it has come to due to Tooba’s (non) marriage. Asfand declares that he knows how to prove his loyalty to Mirha and suddenly…..the two are seen getting married secretly. Why would this be a good option? This is a very last resort, one that would be taken when both sets of parents refuse to get the two married. Instead, Asfand and Mirha jump to get married in secret as a “guarantee of commitment” from Asfand, as if Mirha won’t get into more trouble when her family finds out. This step is taken unusually quick and leaves the viewer with raised eyebrows. It must be said though that Ali Ansari and Nazish Jehangir make a good-looking pair and are likable on-screen.
The highlight of the show, at present, is the potential relationship between Adeel and Tooba. Both Mohsin Abbas Haider and Kiran Haq are great performers, two actors that hog the screen when they are in the frame, and they are giving strong performances here as well – and hopefully, their roles will only improve from here on out. The preview for episode two shows Adeel pursuing Mirha (in an inappropriate way), which will fall flat when he realizes she’s already married. How will Tooba and Adeel wind up together – and what will be the outcome of their union? While the first episode isn’t off to a strong start, the show seems to have promise due to its lead cast and potentially interesting story.
