Dubai: Flexible Working Hours For Government Staff From 16 August

There is good news for government staff in Dubai. The Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) has just introduced a new policy on flexible working hours for government employees in order to boost their productivity and improve their level of job satisfaction.

From 16 August onwards, government staff members will be able start their work day at any time between 6:30-8:30 am, according to a circular issued on Saturday, 8 August by the human resource authority. All employees will need to work for the number of hours officially set by their organisation.

The new rule is not applicable to employees who need to constantly communicate and deal with the public and those working in shifts unless their organisation decides to adopt this policy for them in the scenario that the change does not impact workflow and service provision.

The HR departments of government organisations in the emirate are required to come up with a mechanism to implement the new policy and make changes to their internal attendance, departure hours and regulations. They need to coordinate with various organisational units for the smooth implementation of flexible hours. They are also required to collect data and compile reports periodically on the new system and share the results with DGHR.

Speaking about this move, Director-General DGHR, Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi said the decision was made to ensure the safety and happiness of staff members, under the directives of the Strategic Affairs Council of Dubai’s Executive Council. He said the flexible timings’ policy would be beneficial during bad weather conditions and also help reduce traffic congestion during peak hours and help employees achieve a better work-life balance and find more time to pursue their personal interests.
