“Dulhan” continues to entertain viewers as one of the few thriller-style dramas currently on air. Starring Sami Khan, Sumbal Iqbal, Faizan Khawaja and Mashal Khan in lead roles, the story has been written by Adeel Razzaq and directed by Adeel Siddiqui. Stuck between two men in an unusual situation, Amal now has to fight for her right to live on her own terms and no longer tip-toe in fear. But will that be easy now living under the same roof as Mekaal?
While it’s understandable that Amal is under immense pressure to continue working to provide for her family, some behaviors are beginning to grate on the nerves. Mekaal continues to pursue Amal – but is pursue really the right word? What is he trying to do exactly? Mekaal offers to provide for her and offers her some financial security, which not only makes Amal raise her eyebrows, but also the audience. It’s wonderful to see how Amal stands up for herself against Mekaal, requesting her “izzat” (dignity) over any financial gains and asking Mekaal to openly accept her as his wife. And yet – why is this her decision? Why wouldn’t Amal’s choice be to simply move away from a toxic situation and move forward with life? Her marriage to Mekaal is “secret” and Amal does not have any type of soft corner for Mekaal. She has made it clear to her friend repeatedly that she does not respect him or trust him as far as she can throw a ball. And yet, she’s asking him to reject Annie and accept her as his wife openly. Why would she want this? Why wouldn’t she simply ask him for a divorce on the spot and move on with a clean slate? She was never Mekaal’s wife in any way that mattered, so the entire situation could be brushed away with a divorce – and yet she does not even think about this option. This is where the story seems flawed and the angle keeping Amal under the same roof as Mekaal feels forced. That being said, Amal is finally fed up and has begun fighting for her rights, gently being pushed and given the confidence by her friend.
On the other end, Shahmeer (Faizan Khawaja) plants the idea that Mekaal has his eye on Amal in Annie’s (Mashal Khan) head. Annie is deeply disturbed by Amal’s presence. But why? While it’s true that Annie is a seriously obsessive woman and certainly is picking up on her own intuition, albeit in overdrive, has Mekaal or Amal really given Annie any reason to believe they are having a relationship? Her stress over a worker in the house is illogical.

And still, this show tells a very interesting story that keeps the viewer hooked. Sumbal Iqbal and Sami Khan are doing a great job portraying their roles and the complex emotions that come along with them. The story appears to really take off in the next episode (unless the wedding sequence is a dream, which is entirely possible) and it seems Amal has finally had enough of being yanked around by Shahmeer and Mekaal. What will happen when Amal demands her rights (and should she be demanding those rights when she has another option?)?
