Dulhan Episode 15: Sumbal Iqbal’s Amal Stands Up For Herself

Sami Khan, Sumbal Iqbal, Faizan Khawaja and Mashal Khan star in “Dulhan,” a drama with a different story that’s keeping viewers hooked. The story has been written by Adeel Razzaq and the show has been directed by Adeel Siddiqui. As the story continues to move forward, Amal has now begun to fight back and is trying to discover where her place truly is. Now under the same roof as Mekaal, her “secret husband,” she is now beginning to realize she must take action to improve her circumstances.

In episode 15, Mekaal (Sami Khan) has taken it upon himself to “handle” the situation. It’s still unclear what Mekaal is actually trying to do, because it no longer seems as though he has an active romantic interest in Amal. Rather, he seems to be trying to absolve himself of the guilt he has towards the situation – but was he ever really feeling guilty to begin with? Regardless, Amal (Sumbal Iqbal) is uninterested in his apologies and asks him if he has given her words any thought, making it clear that the only way he can make things right is to accept their marriage. Of course, Mekaal refuses and says he cannot do this. However, he offers her protection from Shahmeer (Faizan Khawaja) and says that he will give her an apartment in her name. While Amal feels insulted in the moment by the proposition and the idea that he believes he can buy her off, her friend tries to knock some sense into her.

Right here, it must be said that the role of the friend is a strong one. She is a supportive, loving, helpful and genuine friend and Amal does not give her enough credit, nor does she treat her as nicely as she deserves. It’s irritating to see Amal’s illogical behavior, because she is clearly not going to get anything out of her marriage to Mekaal, so she might as well take what is her right financially and take the apartment. And yet, when Amal finally makes a good decision, the audience feels proud of her for finally using common sense. Amal and Mekaal’s marriage was done in secret, so Amal decides that she wants nothing more than a divorce. But the proud feeling doesn’t last for long. The marriage was done in secret, so the divorce should’ve just been done and forgotten – just like the marriage. Amal’s entire issue is tied to being married to Mekaal and not being able to move on with her life. And yet, Amal pulls out a cell phone and begins recording Mekaal’s divorce, which obviously agitates him and he refuses to give the divorce. This move of Amal’s is very frustrating to watch as a viewer.

Amal then decides that she will make things as uncomfortable as she possibly can by hijacking Mekaal and Annie’s (Mashal Khan) marriage. On the wedding day, she announces that she’s Mekaal’s wife and demands that Mekaal divorce her before he can marry again, shocking both Mekaal and Annie’s families. Mekaal, of course, denies even knowing Amal. What happens next is, again, frustrating. Annie is heartbroken, shocked that Mekaal could have betrayed her this way, but again chooses to believe Mekaal. Why does Annie choose to believe a man repeatedly who always seems to be followed by controversy? What does Annie see in Mekaal? Yes, it’s clear that she has an obsessive jealous streak, but she has seen reason before, so why not now? Why can’t a woman of today, a modern woman, simply be a street smart woman? The only way this would be digestible is if Annie has done this to get back at Mekaal in some way, otherwise Annie will be yet another hopeless character. Mashal Khan is doing a wonderful job of playing this character though.

Dulhan Episode 14: Sumbal Iqbal’s Amal Finds Her Voice and Stands Up For Herself

Both Sumbal Iqbal and Sami Khan are giving great performances as Amal and Mekaal. Their characters are complex and complicated and they are doing a good job of showing this. However, at this point, some more depth is really required for both characters, Shahmeer and Annie. Their actions need to make sense and their mindsets need to be revealed, because it’s getting difficult to understand where the story is going and what the thought process is for these characters. Still, things seem to be taking a turn for the better next week when Annie and Mekaal’s mother find out about Mekaal’s marriage to Amal (potentially).
