“Dulhan” stars Sami Khan, Sumbul Iqbal, Faizan Khawaja and Mashal Khan in lead roles, having been written by Adeel Razzaq and directed by Adeel Siddiqui. “Dulhan” tells the story of a woman caught between two men, but in an unusual way. While being pursued by one, she is married to the other – but neither man has good intentions or can be considered honorable.
Episode five of “Dulhan” reveals a lot about the family connections in Shahmeer (Faizan Khawaja) and Mekaal’s (Sami Khan) families. While Mekaal continues to struggle with the idea of marrying Annie (Mashal Khan), a woman who he sees as controlling and obsessive, a lot of information is passed on to him, making both Mekaal and the audience realize that backing out of this relationship will not be in his best interest. Mekaal’s mother informs him that the shares of their business have essentially been merged with Shahmeer’s father’s business, meaning the fate of their financial future rests in the families joining together through Annie and Mekaal’s marriage. Unfortunately, neither Mekaal or Annie seem particularly enthusiastic about the union. While Annie loves Mekaal, she does not like his flirtatious ways. It’s not quite clear if Mekaal’s opinion on Annie’s possessiveness is true or not. As viewers, we have seen how flirtatious and immature Mekaal is – he’s a man who married a woman for a dare and then tore up the Nikkah papers to destroy the evidence. Annie may just recognize that Mekaal is not an up-and-up guy. How will she react when the truth about his marriage to Amal is revealed? Mashal Khan always does well in the roles she chooses and this is no less. She is confident and believable as Annie. Sami Khan, of course, is a natural as always. One is simply waiting for his character to really take off into the story.
Amal (Sumbul Iqbal) struggles with her recent past and her mistakes continue to haunt her. While she has a great support in her friend and boss at work, things really go for a turn when Amal bumps into Shahmeer at her university. While she makes a narrow escape after being hounded by Shahmeer in the bathroom, he does eventually catch up with her again, this time at her place of work. While he’s chased off by Amal’s boss, Amal is now fearful for her life and spends most of the episode looking over her shoulder. However, with her stepmother (stepmonster), Amal cannot afford to stay home and not work. Amal spots Mekaal on her way to work one day, but he leaves before she can approach him.

Shahmeer is an interesting character, mostly because it’s entirely unclear what his intentions are. He wanted revenge – well he has essentially ruined her life. So what does he want now? To assault her? And if that’s the case, why would he think she would willingly allow that? He cannot marry her, because she is now legally married to Mekaal. Shahmeer is a very difficult, complex character and there is no confusion – he is thoroughly negative. Faizan Khawaja is doing a great job playing this role, giving Shahmeer just the right amount of intensity and an unstable quality that fits the story.
“Dulhan” continues to tell an intriguing story and the real highlight of the story is that one can’t predict what will happen next. The characters are equally unpredictable. At the end of the episode, we even hear Amal voice her thoughts to her friend – if she does manage to get hold of Mekaal, is he really forgivable? Does he want forgiveness? Amal seems fairly clear that she holds Mekaal equally responsible in this revenge vendetta of Shahmeer’s. So what will be the outcome? Time will tell, but for now, “Dulhan” has delivered yet another intriguing episode.
