Family Guy’s new season opens with PSL joke and Pakistani fans can’t handle it

If you’re into animated films and series, then you’ll be familiar with the animated series, Family Guy. The show premiered its 19th season over the weekend, and it was an episode quite out of the ordinary with a surprise for Pakistani fans. *Spoiler Alert* During the opening scene of the first episode which was titled Stewie’s First Word, the Pakistan Super League is mentioned.

The episode begins with Peter and the gang at the Clam, the neighbourhood bar which they frequent often. In the scene, Quagmire expresses his frustration with the influx of foreign sports fans crowding the place every Saturday morning. He can then be seen pointing at two Pakistanis, who turn out to be supporters of one of the PSL teams, Lahore Qalandars. While Joe turns out to be a Karachi Kings fan he is seen quickly covering his t-shirt while commenting ” I am rooting for Karachi but I don’t have a death wish about it.”

Of course, the scene quickly gained momentum on social media and Pakistani fans were excited to be featured in such a popular show. There were some netizens however, who were not satisfied and were irked with the accent used in the episode, asserting that the Lahori fans in the episode can be heard with a more Indian accent than a Pakistani one.

“Awesome !! @thePSLt20 has become much more famous,” wrote one amused Twitter user while Fasi Zaka wrote, “This season’s Family Guy premiere launches with a joke about Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalanders.”

On the accent used by the character, one user questioned, “Since when do Lahoris sound like that? Ignorant much.”

While another joked, “Right?! It’s way too sophisticated for Lahoris! They’re using words with too many syllables.”

Another annoyed user was quick to say that it was more an Indian accent than a Pakistani one. “Indian accents used unfortunately. Never heard a Pakistani talk with that enunciation ever.”
