Marriages are forever. Isn’t this the statement? However, what happens one is hopelessly in love with someone else before marriage? If that person reappears in life, does the bond of marriage hold the same strength? That’s what “Fitoor” seems to explore. “Fitoor” stars Faysal Qureshi, Kiran Haq, Hiba Bukhari and Wahaj Ali in lead roles. The story has been written by Zanjabeel Asim and directed by Siraj Ul Haq
The first episode introduces viewers to the main characters: Haider (Faysal Qureshi), Mehmal (Kiran Haq), Dilnasheen (Hiba Bukhari) and Hamza (Wahaj Ali). This story begins with two different tracks, the first with Haider and Mehmal and the second with Hamza and Dilnasheen. Haider is an older bachelor, a man who refuses to marry after being left brokenhearted when his love, his cousin Mehmal, married someone else. While Haider always felt that Mehmal would marry him, she simply relished in his attention, vain and aware of the effect her appearance and presence had on him. In short, she enjoyed the attention, but did not waste a moment going for someone “better” when the opportunity arose. Mehmal is a more complicated character on this show, one who was very self-assured and confident, but her current situation has altered this. In the present, Mehmal is now married with a child and is completely neglected by her husband. This has given her confidence a jolt and to lift her spirits, she often visits Haider’s home to bask in his praise, love and attention. While this may make her feel good about herself, it’s detrimental to Haider’s mental psyche as he’s unable to move on, constantly thinking about her. However, when his mother falls ill, he agrees to get married – a fact that, again, hurts Mehmal’s ego. Kiran Haq and Faysal Qureshi both do a great job in this episode. Faysal manages to play the “younger” flashbacks and the present-day Haider in a way that is digestible and likable. Unfortunately, as soon as Hiba Bukhari’s Dilnasheen comes face-to-face with Haider, that statement may no longer stand.
Dilnasheen is a young college-going girl who is in love with her best friend’s brother, Hamza (Wahaj Ali). Hamza is genuinely committed to Dilnasheen and wants to marry her. The chemistry between Hamza and Dilnasheen is made all the more root-worthy with Wahaj Ali’s smoldering, intense stares and one just wants to see more. But will this couple have a happy ending? It doesn’t seem so, considering Haider, now ready to get married, bumps into Dilnasheen at his cousin’s wedding – and falls for her cheerful, happy persona. Now coming back to what was not likable about this scene: It never sits well when a man simply spots a girl, does not have any verbal interaction or connection with her and decides he’s going to marry her. But this is obviously what’s going to happen here and that’s not really a relationship to root for – especially considering Dilnasheen is interested in someone else.

The first episode of “Fitoor” comes together nicely and presents a story that is interesting. The characters are complex enough that the story does not come across as flat, which it easily could have. Even Dilnasheen’s background is not squeaky clean with a dominating mother (Saba Hameed) and it’s clear there are some issues present there. Will Dilansheen manage to fight for her relationship with Hamza or will she find herself married to Haider?
