After much talk and deliberation, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has formally stripped Harvey Weinstein of his honourary award. The decision was made following his conviction for sexually assaulting a former production assistant and raping an actor.
According to an official announcement posted in the London Gazette, “The Queen has directed that the appointment of Harvey Weinstein to be an Honorary Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated 29 January 2004, shall be cancelled and annulled.”
Harvey Weinstein, 68, is serving a 23-year prison term in New York state following his February 24 conviction. He has appealed the conviction. It was earlier shared by a leading British daily that the fallen Hollywood mogul was reportedly set to lose his honorific Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) at the Honours Forfeiture Committee meeting on Friday for ‘bringing the system into disrepute.’
The essential move was rallied for by playwright Polly Creed citing French President Emmanuel Macron removing Weinstein’s Legion d’Honneur right after the first allegations made waves in 2017. Over time, more than 80 women including Hollywood A-Listers have come forward to accuse Weinstein of sexual harassment, including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rose McGowan, etc.
