Hathras Incident: Bollywood Demands Justice For Assault Victim

From Pakistan to India, heartbreaking stories of rape and extortion by sick-minded men have come out in the recent past. Last month, Twitter was abuzz with posts slamming the Lahore motorway incident where a Gujranwala-based woman was sexually assaulted by two armed men in front of her little children. People across Pakistan took to the streets protesting against such heinous crimes. In India, a young Dalit woman from Hathras, passed away in a Delhi hospital after sustaining serious injuries during an alleged gang rape. She was cremated on Wednesday morning in her village amid tight security. Renowned showbiz personalities and public figures have now come forward to condemn the brutal occurrence, also questioning the government for the unsafety of women in their home country.

Unfortunately, the victim became paralyzed after being dragged on the field by the attackers on September 14 and died at the Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday, after fighting for her life for two whole weeks. “The police have forcibly taken the dead body, and my father along with them for cremation. When my father reached Hathras, he was immediately taken (to the crematorium) by the police,” the victim’s brother told the media. Now, several Bollywood figures, political leaders and activist are demanding justice for the 19-year-old innocent girl.

Akshay Kumar was the first to express his grief over the episode. “Angry & Frustrated! Such brutality in #Hathras gang rape. When will this stop? Our laws & their enforcement must be so strict that the mere thought of punishment makes rapists shudder with fear! Hang the culprits. Raise your voice to safeguard daughters and sisters- it’s the least we can do,” he shared on Twitter. Taking to her Instagram story, Anushka Sharma wrote, “The horrific story of Hathras gangrape has devastated me…I sincerely hope that strictest punishment is given to the barbaric men who have carried out such a horrific, inhuman act on a young life and caused her family irreparable pain.”

Disha Patani shared a post which featured a sketch of a girl (victim of Hathras case) with a bleeding tongue and a message which read, “Justice For Manisha”. Richa Chadha demanded the punishment of the rapists, writing, “#JusticeForHathrasVictim everyone deserves to live with dignity. Punish the perpetrators.” Queen star Kangana Ranaut could not hold back her anger either, and for all the right reason! She tweeted, “Shoot these rapists publicly, what is the solution to these gang rapes that are growing in numbers every year? What a sad and shameful day for this country. Shame on us we failed our daughters.”

Echoing her sentiments, Yami Gautam tweeted, “Tried really hard to gather my thoughts before expressing my sorrow, anger & disgust. It’s 2020 & still so many Nirbhayas have to give their lives. Can’t imagine the pain she must have endured & her family. Praying for severe punishment & justice #RIPManishaValmiki.” ‘Housefull 4’ actor Riteish Deshmukh condemned the gang-rape in Hathras and demanded that the perpetrators are brought to justice. He tweeted, “The culprits of this brutality & horrific crime should be hanged in public. #Hathras.” Farhan Akhtar wondered the day all this violence will come to an end. He wrote, “Broken heart Sad sad day. How much longer can this be allowed to go on .. #Hathras.” Here is hoping this world becomes a safer and much better place for women from all walks of life.
