Heavy Monsoon Rains Hit Karachi: Viral Videos Show Overflooding and Havoc

Monsoon season brings heavy rainfall and fast winds every year. Many people – especially those belonging to desi communities – indulge in hot pakoras and samosas as the enjoy the breezy weather on their balconies. Rain helps to lower temperature and uplift moods on a scorching hot day and this year has been no different. Various cities across Pakistan have witnessed moderate to heavy showers. On the downside, however, inadequate draining systems in some places of Karachi have resulted in water-clogging, traffic commotion, drowning vehicles and a whole lot of havoc. So much so, that Karachiites are now praying for the rains to end once and for all!

Twitter has been abuzz with videos from some majorly-affected areas in Karachi and the hash tags #Karachirain and #KhiAlert have been trending since morning. Some of the metropolitan city have suffered more compared to others. These include Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, Orangi Town and Gulistan-e-Johar among others. One user by the name of Rogue Aviator shared something that tug right at our heartstrings. Alongside a snippet of cars underwater, the post read, “I feel like crying, people buy a car after spending all the savings they have and the car is like basic necessity now. Watching them floating in front of their very eyes must be devastating yet bija teer bija and the audacity not to even have rescue services.” Another commented, “I don’t know exactly about it but I guess this much water will surely damage the cars. Majority of us belongs to middle class and we know how difficult it is to buy a car nowadays.” While Karachi received the heaviest spell of 86mm, some users have come forward to criticize the government for not playing its part.

A heart-breaking video from Orangi Town has gone viral too. It shows wet weather overflow alongside disposed garbage items such as plastic bottles, wrappers and tins floating in the water. It was aptly captioned, “What a disaster. Orangi Town, Karachi, 2020. A common street, not a drainage system. What a view of Karachi.” A comment to the above-mentioned post read, “Other cities are excelling when Karachi is bathing in its own sewage.” A user responded with, “Shame on whoever has done this to Karachi!”

Another video depicting hospital waste, wet mud and excessive dirt is also making the rounds on the micro-blogging site. “Karachi people living in extremely deplorable conditions because of sheer incompetency of administration. Rain has become a nightmare for us instead of kind blessing. #TogetherWeCan! Beach is calling you again for cleanup action. Hospital waste,” penned the user. A scary video showed the entire campus of Hamdard University flooded with high-levels of rainwater and untreated sewage overflow. It is based on the Madinat al-Hikmah Hakim Mohammad Said Road in Karachi. The Sindh police is being lauded for controlling traffic while risking their own lives in waist-deep water. One user posted a video of an MCB Bank branch hit by powerful rains. “The scenes are not of a flood-hit area or a coastal strip after a tsunami, but of Pakistan’s largest city, #Karachi, #KarachiRains#KarachiWeather,” the post read.
