Here’s how you can celebrate Independence Day this year

Independence Day is around the corner and every year this day is celebrated with much fervour. Everyone is very patriotic about this day and they love to celebrate with much zeal and vigour. Pakistanis around the world are always in high spirits on this day and it is a day we very much look forward to. There is much to celebrate on this day as we celebrate our independence; with this year marking our 72nd Independence Day. While we celebrate it on a large scale each year, this year; being in the midst of a global pandemic, our celebrations may vary.

While the lockdown and restrictions have been lifted, it may not necessarily mean that it is safe to venture out in large crowds and celebrate on a large scale. How else can you celebrate Independence day then? We’ve rounded up some creative ways you can spend Independence Day at home with the family or some friends.

Dress up in shades of white and green

You don’t have to dress up just to go out, why not just do it at home as you celebrate independence. Browse your wardrobe for your favourite green tee or your white skinny jeans and put together a fabulous outfit to celebrate a day of independence. If you’re spending the day at home then you can really get creative with your look. Tie a green silk scarf in your hair, go bold with some green eyeshadow on your eyelids or opt for a white and green manicure to stand out from the crowd!

Read about Pakistan’s history and how it came into being

We all know that we celebrate this day after becoming independent from India and it is most certainly a day that needs to be celebrated. But have you ever wondered how we came into being? How did the partition take place? The struggles that those before us faced when they were divided? There is so much history, so many facts and so many things that can be learned about our nation and this is the perfect day to start. Read about the constitution, impart your knowledge to the family and you could even have an Independence day quiz to really make a day of it.

Bake some independence day treats

Around this time of year, the shops and bakeries are full of items and desserts for Independence Day. Cupcakes, cakes, brownies, desi mithai and the list could go on. If you want to get busy this independence day, why not try your hand at baking or cooking some savoury items for the family. Decorate your cupcakes and baked goods with green and white icing and if you’re feeling generous, why not send some across to the neighbours? They’ll surely be thrilled!

Decorate your homes with paper flags and national colours

In the spirit of independence day, why not cover your house in the colours of the national flag. This can be a particularly great activity for the younger ones to take part in and enjoy. Hoist a large national flag on top of your roof and use other decorative items around the house. Use paper flags, balloons, badges, door hangers and other wall hangings to add the colours of the flag to your home. This will bring the spirit of independence straight to your doorstep and the younger ones will truly learn the value of this day.

Have a movie screening at home

It’s always great to watch a good old classic and this independence day you could also learn a thing or two. Indulge in films pertaining to independence including movies like Jinnah or dramas like Jinnah se Quaid, Alpha Bravo Charlie. All of these are informative and allow families a change to bond and learn at the same time. You could even invite the neighbours and your friends to join in on the fun and this is the perfect opportunity to serve the delicious goods you baked earlier.

Play board games

This is another easy and effortless way to celebrate independence day and spend time at home. It truly gives you the opportunity to bond with the family and do something fun. It is also a chance to get away from our devices and screens and indulge in something other than Netflix and Instagram. This activity is not just fun for the young ones but also for the competitive adults in the family who love a good game or two!
