How your skincare routine may have changed in self-quarantine: the do’s and don’ts

If you’re reading this, you have probably been staying indoors for the past few months, working from home and social distancing. The world came to a standstill with the spread of the novel coronavirus and forced us all indoors, bringing a halt to our life as we knew it. As many parts of the world begin to open up once again, it is pertinent to note that the past few months have wreaked havoc; not just for us, but for our skin as well. A change in lifestyle, routine and way of life inevitably has an impact on the way we function, in turn, the results show on the outside; on our skin.

Did you find that there was a change in your skincare routine? Did you stop to wonder how spending so much time indoors could affect your skin? Do you still need to cleanse twice a day if you’re spending more time at home and not being exposed to pollution? We’re here to answer all your questions.

Being indoors has actually had quite a positive impact on everyone’s skin. You’re away from the pollution, the free radicals and your skin is finally getting the breather it very much needed. This led to many believing that they didn’t have to cleanse twice a day. This is one mistake you should not make! Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse twice a day, everyday. Just because you haven’t been outside all day, does not mean your skin doesn’t need to be cleansed. There will still be toxins and bacteria all around you which will need to be stripped at the beginning and end of every day.

Another mistake a lot of us have been making is skipping the SPF. We believe that just because we are indoors, we can skip the sunscreen because we aren’t being exposed to the sun. But UV rays have the ability to come through your windows and you still need protection from this. Do yourself and your skin a favour, and don’t skip the sunscreen!

One of the best things to have come out of self-quarantining is foregoing the makeup. Applying makeup is something all of us did and this no longer became a necessity when we were forced indoors. Perhaps we opt for some makeup during our Zoom meetings but other than that, we’re totally happy to go without. This is one of the reasons why our skin has started to feel and look better. So if you can avoid it, go without the extra layer and let your skin breathe.

These Tips Will Help You Stay Active If You’re Still Working From Home

And lastly, give yourself that facial at home! While many spas and salons may have opened, it may be best to be extra cautious for a little bit longer and pamper yourselves at home. Once lockdown was enforced across the world, many skin care junkies and aestheticians took to social media to create interactive skincare sessions which have all proved to be rather helpful. There’s a whole range of content available online which will even guide you on how to give yourself that facial at home.

Being at home makes it easy to forgo your skincare or the routine which you used to follow but ensure that you have a set time each week when you do a deep cleanse and indulge your skin in a face mask or sheet. Perhaps on your day off, set aside an hour and pamper your skin because despite being indoors, it will still need that extra TLC!

And lastly, don’t forget about your hands! With the constant hand washing and sanitising and dish washing, your hands probably look like they have aged. Always make sure you are moisturising your hands after each wash and perhaps opt for a hand mask at least once a week.

We may have been guilty of not following all these steps but it is important to care for your skin! Because you want to be ready and glowing for when things eventually do get back to normal and we can head out and live our lives normally!
