Iffat Omar Is Under Fire Again Over Recent Comments

Former supermodel Iffat Omar recently came under fire when netizens accused her of being a fake supporter of the #MeToo movement. During an earlier episode of her show ‘Say It All With Iffat Omar’– which featured celebrity guests Ali Rehman and Hareem Farooq – the host made a candid confession which did not sit too well with social media users. She admitted to Rahat Kazmi being her first crush when the duo was shooting for the play Nangay Paon. What angered the internet, however, was the way in which she spoke about the veteran actor, claiming she would intentionally opt for retakes so that she was able to enact the “hugging” scene over and over again. Now, Omar is once again under the radar for her recent comments on another episode of her show.

She is being slammed for making a mockery out of the Lahore motorway gang-rape incident, in which two armed men sexually assaulted a Gujranwala-based woman in front of her children. While speaking about the chemical castration of such culprits on her show, Omar threw in some humour and it was certainly not the right time to do so! A low blow on her part, she is now being called out for being extremely insensitive with regard to a serious issue. Twitter users took to their accounts expressing great disappointment in Omar. The video has now gone viral with everyone reposting it on the social media platform.

Many have lashed out at Omar for taking advantage of her high-profile celebrity status and not thinking twice before weighing in on an important subject. “You can disagree on the type of punishment for a rapist and suggest what kind of punishment you want for such hardcore criminals. But how can you be so insensitive and stupid to start joking about such a serious issue/crime? Disgusting,” penned a user. Another added, “Is she a political analyst or an intellectual of our society? She is not even a comedian. #Metoo ki supporter but khudd #tharki as well. Banda apni auqat he daikh lae, baat kernay sae pehlay. Apni achievement kya hai, life mae? ‘Japhi with unsuspecting innocent man’.”

One user on the micro-blogging site posted, “From Sabir Nazar mocking PTI supporters with disabilities to Iffat Omar making a joke out of rape, these people really have shown their scummy side post 25th July. IK isn’t even halfway through this term yet, you’ll go insane by the end of it if you don’t make your peace with it.” A user uploaded a GIF of a man saying ‘Trash’ and captioned it, “Iffat Omar’s current efforts at relevance.”

Some also questioned Omar’s talent, tweeting “Iffat Omar is touching a new low with the scripted show. She is talented and can find more and better work. So many of us like, admire and grew up watching her. Bus kerdain yeh. It’s way below her.” Twitterati also feels that Omar is being paid for such vulgar remarks on her TV show. “@IffatOmar is being paid to share such stupid jokes. after all what matters most is the money in the bank,” read a tweet. No one finds this kind of stuff funny, lamented a Twitter user Fahad Shafiq. “The most cringe content creator out there and worst of all she thinks she is funny! Somebody sit her down and tell her “tuj se nhi hoga behan,” he wrote. Pakistanis living abroad have also taken offence to Omar’s statements. One expat posted, “This not only insensitive to joke about rape but also an insult of overseas Pakistanis. May be our part is small but we play our part by sending our hard-earned money to Pakistan. These type of low-grade attacks on overseas Pakistani is ridiculous and pathetic.”
