News of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) blocking popular video sharing application, TikTok, for failing to remove “immoral” content went viral last week and got everyone talking. Social media was divided with different opinions with some lauding the move and others against it. “In view of the number of complaints from different segments of the society against immoral/indecent content on the video-sharing application TikTok, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued instructions for blocking the application,” the authority said in its official notification.
There is one particular TikTok user who this would have affected more so than others. Janat Mirza, the leading TikToker became the first Pakistani to reach 10 million followers on the app, just a day prior to the ban being put into place. And now, following the ban, she has opened up and voiced her opinion over the recent banning of the app. In a surprising move, the famed TikToker is in support of the ban in Pakistani. “I, myself, wanted a ban on TikTok in Pakistan, but it should not be on a permanent basis,” she told various news publications.
Janat Mirza is currently in Japan and in a telephonic conversation she said, “I am in Japan and I have received news from Pakistan about the ban on TikTok.” She also said that many users make their livelihood through the app and it is also a platform that allows people to showcase their talent. She asserted that the ban was necessary for the time being, but necessary SOPs should be put in place and the content should be monitored. Once the much needed precautions are put in place, the ban should be lifted she asserted. “Videos should be allowed to be broadcast after a formal code of conduct,” Mirza said.
