Indian Film and TV Industry Mourns the Death of Sameer Sharma in Apparent Suicide

While Bollywood and the Indian film audiences are still grappling with film actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s recent suicide, another Indian television actor Sameer Sharma has been found dead in his Malad apartment in Mumbai. The 44-year-old actor was found hanging from his kitchen ceiling on Wednesday, 6 August by his building’s watchman who quickly alerted the neighbours.

The actor had rented his apartment in February this year. He did not leave behind any suicide note and is believed to have passed away two days ago. According to news reports, the Mumbai police has registered a case of accidental death and sent his body for autopsy.

Sharma, born in Delhi, initially worked in advertising in Bengaluru but soon switched to acting. He started his television career with the serial Dil Kya Chahta Hai and was also seen in popular TV soaps like Kahaan Ghar Ghar Ki, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki, Left Right Left and various others. He appeared in negative roles in some series such as Jyoti. He also ventured into Bollywood with a supporting role in Siddharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra’s romcom Hasee Toh Phasee. The actor was last seen as Shaurya Maheshwari in the daily soap Yeh Rishta Hai Pyaar Ka on Star Plus.

A poetry enthusiast, Sharma’s last post on his Instagram page read, “I built my pyre. And slept on it. And with my fire it was lit. And all that was me. I burned in it. I killed my dream to wake up from it. Now my dream is gone and I with it. I woke up to ashes and I was in it. I took what was left. And left it in a stream. And hoped my ashes this time have a better dream.”

Several actors and other people from the film and television industry took to social media to express their shock at the actor’s apparent suicide. Actor Ashwin Mushran wrote, “This probably won’t be talked about as much as SSR but a TV actor is presumed to have killed himself. Samir Sharma – Talented guy with a lot of work to his name. It’s harsh for people in this industry right now. Not everybody has the support or can maybe reach out for it.”

Actor-producer Karanvir Bohra tweeted, “What is happening to people, why why why are they doing this …. Rest in peace brother.”

Actress Kritika Kamra wrote, “I hope they let you rest in peace Sameer Sharma.”

There are many mental health practitioners like @dr_samirparikh @netshrink @varkhachulani always willing to help and manage your mental well being. There are many helplines too.”

Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan shared a picture of Sameer on his instagram story and wrote, “#RipSameerSharma.”
