The IPL franchise – a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India and one of the biggest in the world – will be heading to the UAE next month. The tournament is scheduled to run from September 19, 2020 to November 10, 2020. The Indian Premier League attracts thousands of spectators from around the world every year. But it is not clear whether IPL will open to full stadiums this time around, due to the Covid-19 outbreak. It has however been confirmed that the teams will observe a six-day quarantine period upon reaching Dubai. The decision was taken after a meeting was held between the owners of all IPL teams.
“We can’t take chances on health issues and team members will observe a six-day quarantine period,” The Indian Express quoted an IPL official as saying. The Dubai government requires a PCR test from each passenger within 96 hours prior to departure and another one upon reaching the Gulf emirate. In the case of any player testing positive, they will immediately be isolated for a two-week period.

Topics including bio-security and squad strength were also discussed in the meeting, which was held via a conference call. Apparently, each franchise will have to arrange its own bio-security, while a BCCI-appointed agency will supervise everything. Team owners have allegedly agreed on restricting their respective squad strength to 24. “The BCCI has informed us orally that Vivo is not there,” stated the IPL official. The Board is also expected to issue a new RFP (Request for Proposal) to pick a replacement sponsor, most likely short-term for the 2020 season. But even within the IPL governing council, it seems the new sponsorship amount will be “much less” due to the coronavirus economic impact. When asked if the team owners decided to seek compensation from the Board, the franchise official said, “No decision has been taken on the issue.”
