Jalan Episode 20: Nadia Hussain’s Kinza Takes Charge

“Jalan” continues to make waves each week with its controversial storyline. Most recently, the show had viewers talking after the character of Misha (Areeba Habib) was killed off, committing suicide after being unable to accept her husband’s (and sister’s) betrayal. Starring Minal Khan, Emmad Irfani, Areeba Habib, Fahad Sheikh, Hajra Yamin, Mohammad Ahmed, Sajida Syed, Nadia Hussain and Maira Khan, the show has been written by Sidra Seher Imran and directed by Aabis Raza.

In episode 20, the episode begins with Humaira (Maira Khan) leaving back home, taking Misha’s child with her with the blessing of Misha’s parents. As she’s set to leave, Asfandyar (Emmad Irfani) storms into the house and, after a fight with the trio, he takes the baby by force and leaves. While Misha’s parents are left in tears, they acknowledge that they cannot fight off the child’s father and Humaira returns back home empty-handed. Unfortunately for Asfand, Nisha is not ready to accept Misha’s child under any circumstance and the two get into a heated argument.

Kinza (Nadia Hussain) takes center stage in this episode and essentially, this entire episode revolves around Asfandyar, Nisha and Kinza. While Kinza loves Misha’s child, her own nephew, she does not welcome the child into the home and makes her disapproval clear, because she is well-aware that Nisha will mistreat the baby. Of course, she is right, because Nisha (Minal Khan) throws a tantrum, leading to Asfand locking Nisha out of the bedroom to protect his child. It’s amazing that Asfandyar has suddenly developed a conscience and has managed to find love for his child, as well as some respect for Kinza once again – but of course, he is as ugly a person as Nisha is and it’s clear that the financial situation has brought Asfand down a peg or two. As the reality of Asfandyar’s financial situation is revealed to Nisha, it becomes clear that Nisha will not make this marriage work and is already creating problems. When she attempts to kick Kinza out of the house, Kinza puts her in her place, making it clear that Nisha is not welcome in her home, demanding that Asfand remove his wife from the house.

This episode itself is not particularly eventful in the sense that nothing really happens. Asfandyar takes the baby home, but the rest of the episode seems repetitive. We, as viewers, know that Kinza is in control financially and we’ve known that for three months now, so it did not need to be stressed repeatedly. Still, Kinza is a likable character, because she stands for what is right and does not bow down to anyone, particularly not allowing Nisha to put a toe out of line. Nadia Hussain steals the show this time, as no one else really stands out. The writing is repetitive at this point and, quite honestly, after Misha’s death, the overall message of the show has left a bitter taste in the mouth.

With the next episode, we will move into new material as Ahmer (Fahad Sheikh) essentially becomes Asfand’s boss and Nisha is seen changing loyalties once again. While it’s satisfying to see this switch, it will only remain so if Ahmer remains unattainable. More than anything, one really wants to see the bond between Ahmer and Areej (Hajra Yamin) being developed and strengthened, because Areej – and Hajra Yamin – deserves more than just being a stand-by chick. While episode 20 was not anything to write home about, the next episode does seem more interesting.
