Hollywood star Johnny Depp has not been having the best of years. From losing his libel battle over an article that claimed he was a wife-beater to being asked to step down from the Fantastic Beasts franchise, he has been dealing with a lot since his divorce from Amber Heard. In an interesting development however, the actor was conferred with a special acting award this week as part of the Cameraimage festival in Poland. A happy-go-lucky Depp was seen smiling from ear to ear while holding his trophy in the Bahamas. His new film Minamata closed the virtual event on November 21.
The movie premiered right after Depp was presented with the prize for Actor with Unique Visual Sensitivity. He wrote the event’s organizers’ a letter in which he praised the cinematographers he has worked with throughout his career. “I have always been someone who needs to not know what is coming next. To capture those unrehearsed moments – those moments of beautiful mistake – those same moments that make cinema, and life, magic,” he wrote.
Depp added he was honoured and humbled to receive the award. It is not confirmed who will be replacing Depp as the villainous character Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. However, reports of Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen being in talks for the project have been making headlines of late. Talking to IGN during an interview about his upcoming sci-fi film Chaos Walking, Mikkelson weighed in on the Harry Potter spinoff series. When asked whether he has been approached for Depp’s role, he said, “Oh, that is on the rumour basis as we speak. So, I know as much as you do from the newspapers. So, I’m waiting for that phone call.”
