Last week, news of Johnny Depp losing the high-stake libel trial against The Sun’s publishers, News Group Newspapers, became the talk of the town. While many of the Pirates of the Caribbean star’s fans rallied in his support and demanded justice for him, the Hollywood heartthrob’s legal counsel termed the verdict as “ridiculous and bewildering”. When Judge Justice Andrew Nicol announced the court ruling on November 2, he shared that the court has refused to provide him with any compensation for damage to his reputation. During the trial, Depp had claimed that he had lost his $650million film fortune and was drowning in $100million debt.
The actor continues to be in financial distress, with matters only becoming worse following his defeat in the libel trial. Now that he has lost the court case against News Group Newspapers (NGN), the actor has been hit with another hefty blow over the astronomical legal fees that The Guardian had earlier reported was estimated around £5 million, reported Page Six.

Had he won the case, Depp could have pocketed £180,000 to £200,000 in damages but will instead have to cover NGN’s legal fees as well, making him suffer through huge financial losses. His personal spending before the court case amounted to a big number too as Depp had reportedly invested in a yacht, private jet, private island and spent approximately $30,000 a month on wine. Depp has been involved in a long-term feud with former wife and model, Amber Heard. In his ruling, Nicol said, “The claimant [Depp] has not succeeded in his action for libel. The defendants [the Sun and News Group Newspapers] have shown that what they published in the meaning which I have held the words to bear was substantially true.” Depp earlier sued NGN and its executive director over an article that referred to him as a “wife-beater”.
