Journalist Ali Salman Alvi arrested on account of wife’s alleged murder

Broadcast journalist Ali Salman Alvi recently came under fire for allegedly being involved in the sudden demise of his wife last week. While several users on social media claimed she committed suicide, others accused Alvi of having some sort of involvement in the death. An FIR was reportedly registered against Alvi on June 29. In the formal complaint, the columnist has been charged with murder by the Rawalpindi police and is currently under arrest. The events that led up to the tragedy remain unknown. However, Alvi has received backlash from social media users on Twitter, some of whom have called him out on accounts of domestic abuse and physical assault.

Many have also come out to support the deceased, Sadaf Zahra Naqvi, slamming Alvi for being a fake advocate of human rights. According to posts on the micro-blogging site, he has been charged with murder under section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The hash tag #JusticeforZahra has been trending on Twitter since the news of her passing. Naqvi has left behind one daughter.

While others are demanding justice against Alvi’s actions, he has not made an official statement yet. “It is hoped that good officers of @RwpPolice will not be influenced. They’ve arrested the accused. FIR mentions signs of torture on body. The racket of extortion & blackmailing of women also needs to be investigated to bring the GANG to justice,” tweeted journalist Arshad Sharif.

Earlier this year, in January, Naqvi posted a string of tweets on her official handle. Her post read, Domestic abuse is an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour… It is very common… In the vast majority of cases it is experienced by women.” She added, “Should violence be suffered or vocalized?” In March this year, Naqvi posted another comment which read, “Domestic violence IS NOT a private matter whether it happens within the four walls of a home or out in the open…Call people out on it please so if nothing else at least they will feel some shame!” May she rest in peace.
