It has been almost a week since the city of Karachi witnessed one of the heaviest rains it has experienced in the past 90 years. More upsetting is the fact that thousands of people are still stranded inside their homes due to the overflowing of gutters with heaps of sewerage making some areas almost inaccessible. To make matters worse, these residents have no electricity, gas or food supplies. But this is not just the case with localities where low-income citizens reside. Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and Clifton – both considered to be two of the ‘posh’ areas of Karachi – have faced a great amount of damage caused by the record-breaking monsoon spells too. While many people came together for a peaceful protest outside the DHA and CBC (Cantonment Board Clifton) offices yesterday, it seems like their efforts bore no fruit.

The upscale areas of DHA and Clifton received 245 millimetres of rain on August 27. The torrential rains have left most roads submerged in water and while some roads have been cleared, the situation continues to be alarming in some commercial areas. Now, several Pakistani celebrities have come forward to voice their concerns on social media. Ayesha Omar penned, “It’s time for accountability. It’s time to speak up. It’s time to take ownership. It’s time to demand our rights. It is time to heal. It’s time.”
Echoing her sentiments, TV personality Anoushey Ashraf added, “Every person who calls Karachi their home needs to attend the peaceful protests and demand better.”

“5th day without electricity in our area in Bath Island,” tweeted veteran actor and producer Samina Ahmad, another supposedly ‘posh’ neighbourhood in Karachi. Actor Aijaz Aslam questioned, “Who is responsible for the mess in DHA Karachi. People are suffering till now with no electricity on the 4th day and no water drainage.” Not one to keep mum about such grave issues, actor Mehwish Hayat, slammed the authorities responsible for such a disastrous situation. “My anger knows no abounds.
