Karachi Rains: Pak Army Intervenes As Relief Efforts Continue Amid Havoc

What began as light drizzling and brief rain spells in the city of Karachi has now turned into a nightmare. Yesterday witnessed heavy rainfall in various parts of the metropolis with non-stop showers in different localities including North Karachi, New Karachi, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Clifton, Defence Housing Authority, MA Jinnah Road, Saddar, Sharae Faisal, PECHS, Tariq Road, Bahadurabad, Federal B Area, University Road, Gulistan-e-Johar, Qayyumabad Chowrangi and Guru Mandir among others. Torrential thunderstorms washed away houses, vehicles, crops and took a handful of precious lives. As Pakistanis came together to voice their concerns regarding poor infrastructure and inadequate draining systems in the country, efforts for flood relief were also put into place throughout Sindh.

Rains this year have been record-breaking, with over 345mm of precipitation in Karachi in the month of August. Twitter is filled with posts about rescue operations being underway in different areas.
“COAS Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa has directed “Pak army” to step up flood relief operations to assist affected people due to recent rains in interior Sindh and Karachi,” wrote one user, adding a string of pictures showing the distribution of food and provision of shelter to those residing in slum areas. A similar tweet read, “Troops must reach out to affected population in distress and extend all necessary care.” Soon after, the Pakistan Army deployed engineers and other experts in assigned districts while also launching a full-fledged Flood Relief operation.

In light of the same, another post read, “More than 70 #PakArmy and #Pakistan#Rangers#Sindh rescue and relief teams are assisting civil administration to provide relief to affected population.” Many sang praises for the Pak Army on Twitter. “Pakistan Army carries out rescue, relief operations in rain: Shifting affected people of Quaidabad through Army engineer boats to safer places and providing shelters. Well done to the Pakistan Army!” Images of the lifeboats show people being transported through the rain water to safer zones of Karachi. “Boats have been deployed in various areas to shift stranded people to safer places,” added a user.
