Karachi Rains: Shaniera Akram Says Pakistanis Deserve Better Than This Amid Overflowing Sewers

Monsoon rains have affected Karachi and its adjoining areas to a great extent. Heavy spells have not only destroyed crops and homes in various districts of Sindh but has also resulted in overflooding, electric poles falling to the ground and traffic jams everywhere. Celebrity and activist Shaniera Akram took to Twitter to raise her voice about the same. And she received the support of a string of social media users! “Aren’t we embarrassed? Aren’t we ashamed? Every year the rains come and washes our rubbish in to the ocean. Only for it to spew back out again for the world to see,” she posted.

The wife of former cricketer Wasim Akram added, “What is it going to take? Does it have to start raining rubbish for us to wake up? We deserve better than this!” Akram was throwing shade at the heaps of untreated waste and sewerage that not one but all Pakistanis are responsible for. Answering her questions, one user wrote, “Due to irresponsible planning and corruption of our previous politicians, Pakistan was always on the back foot. They wasted many many golden years just for the sake of their personal interests. Hands up for your love and support for Pakistan.”

Another added, “Every individual has the responsibility to take care of his house and its nearby areas, little investment makes a great difference instead shouting for government, plantation and proper disposal of household waste. We actually not loyal to us.” A post that tugged right at our heartstrings read, “Maybe rubbish raining will wake us up, but I think it will wash away what little conscience we carry and we will continue to be a destructive species am afraid!” Others advocated the importance of educating our youth and creating awareness amongst the poor. “A few very basic and cheap quick fix ideas! Educating the nation specially youngsters and bring awareness to the public is crucial,” stated a post.
