The city of Karachi broke all previous records as it received multiple spells of heavy rainfall yesterday. As the massive downpour led to various localities being submerged in water, there were many lives and homes lost, with people having to relocate amid overflowing sewers, drowning vehicles, electricity cuts and traffic jams. In a nutshell, it was not a pleasant sight for anyone. Pakistani celebrities recently took to their respective social media platforms and addressed the issue of inadequate drainage systems and untreated waste disposal among other things. From former cricketer Shahid Afridi to actor Yasir Hussain and activist Shaniera Akram, celebrities shared their two cents on unprecedented showers that wreaked havoc in Karachi within a few hours.
“We also saw this city being destroyed like this in our childhood and it is a shame that now our children are also witnessing its destruction! Regardless of political affiliations, the country’s largest and most revenue-generating city has proved to be the administration’s biggest failure,” wrote a disappointed Afridi. He added, “Wish we could learn from any metropolitan city in the world, which has created artificial lakes. Is it our fault that we chose this city to live in; we pay taxes here but what responsibility does the administration fulfill in return? Who will catch the culprits who make Karachi garbage?”
Hussain took to his Instagram story and wrote, “Karachi ko sub ney mil kar barbad kia hai. Haseen shehar hai yeh, kachra daan banadia (Everyone has ruined Karachi together. It was a beautiful city that has turned into a garbage dump).” Akram took to Twitter and posted a series of clips depicting images of a washed-out Karachi. “Electrocution, drowning, irreversible damage to property, poisoning, cross-contamination, hepatitis, dysentery, typhoid, risk of the polio outbreak, not to mention the diseases associated with mosquito infestation like dengue and malaria! How is Karachi not in a state of emergency?”

Entertainment personality Fakhar e Alam was spot on with his words. Stating Karachi has been in a “state of denial” for a long time, he penned, “It baffles everyone that the country’s largest city has only regressed over time. I say this with no political bias just as a citizen. It is almost like people of Karachi have been abandoned,” he tweeted. Writer and activist, Fatima Bhutto also expressed disappointment over the government’s inability to tackle the situation on repeated occasions. “If monsoons happen every single year at the same time, what possible excuse can the government have for never being prepared?” We could not agree more! This incident serves as a wakeup call for the government of Pakistan as well as its citizens who need to work together to keep their homeland clean, green and properly functional.
