As far as publicity goes, “Kasak” received very little in the way of social media buzz and its first episode went unnoticed by most. Replacing “Dushman E Jaan,” the first episode of “Kasak” aired today and seems to have an interesting storyline. Starring Junaid Khan and Iqra Aziz in lead roles, the story focuses on “hard decisions and regrets,” according to the show’s description. This show is written by Muhammad Maqsood and has been directed by Kashif Saleem & Aamir Rathor – but is it an original story? Back in 2013, Sarwat Nazir wrote a drama for Hum TV called “Tanhai,” which starred Goher Mumtaz, Sohai Ali Abro, Azfar Rehman and Ayesha Omer in leading roles. The show dealt with two individuals forced together by their families into marriage and went on to fall in love. The catch? The man had a slightly unstable ex-wife who came back to create a mess in his now-happy life. Watching “Kasak,” one is immediately reminded of this show, because the storyline is identical from the get-go. Looking at the promo for next week’s episode, the show seems to mirror specific scenes from the show as well.
In episode 1, we are introduced to Faryal (Iqra Aziz), a “bubbly” (overly so), confident and happy college student who is in love with her cousin Junaid. While the two plan to get married, things take an awkward turn when, on the day when Faryal is expecting Junaid’s family to bring his proposal, she instead finds another suitor in her home – Daniyal. To make matters worse, her family agrees to the marriage. Viewers later find out that Faryal’s brother (Khalid Malik) has gains to make with this union and he creates a situation where Junaid’s mother rejects Faryal.
On the other end, Daniyal (Junaid Khan) is successful in his career, but his personal life is in shambles as his wife (now ex-wife) has left him and remarried his friend. His father (Javed Sheikh) regrets his hand in Daniyal’s state, though the situation there isn’t clear yet to viewers, and wants to see Daniyal happy. Of course, he arranges Daniyal’s marriage to Faryal and Daniyal dutifully goes along with his wishes.

The overall presentation of this first episode is fairly over the top. Iqra Aziz is a young girl and so it’s not difficult to see her as a college student – but why is she wearing full wedding makeup to college? Faryal is also simply too much in this first episode. In an effort to show her “bubbly” nature, she comes across as loud. Junaid Khan is quiet and plays a more subdued role, particularly in this episode where he’s seen brooding more than speaking. Iqra and Junaid are a good-looking pair though and this alone is reason enough to watch this show, which does have potential. That being said, one only wishes the storyline weren’t so predictable or, to be more blunt, didn’t seem like a rip-off of another show.
